Tax Tips FROM THE IRS (Itemizing Deductions) Most of us North Carolinians at to a benefit banquet, for example, do not deduct what the meal would otherwise cost. Out-of-poc ket car expenses, eight center per mile for church or charity work, are also deductible. The value of your time spent in working for church or charity is not deductible. Even your taxes are deductible if you itemize. Your real estate and property taxes, the state income or local income taxes you paid last year and sales taxes are deductible. There is a table for North Carolina sales tax in the tax instructions for you to follow. However, if you purchased a car, boat, airplane or motor home in 1979, you can add that sales tax to the amount indicated in the table. Other itemized deductions can include casualty or theft losses and certain miscellaneous ex penses, such as union dues, cost of uniforms and cost of job-hunting. Be sure to check your tax instructions to see if you can claim the many miscellane ous deductions allowable. STAMP OF DISPROVAL Wont be long before we’ll all be faced with a choice of president There are two I know not to select for reasons quite evident We have our doubts about Kennedy on what he says he did That fateful night he became better known as the Chappa- quiddick kid And four more years of Jimmy we surely cant abide As a team player, his every effort helps the other side His theory “when a pass is made at you turn the other cheek” Is outmoded in this world of ours this practice made us weak For example the give away of our canal and passage of Salt II For one in his right mind, such judgments would have been one time or another borrow money, pay interest, pay doctor’s bills, contribute to charity or pay taxes. So, you say, what else is new? Actually, nothing is new, but the Federal Government allows you these expenses on your income tax return, if you itemize deductions totaling a certain amount. If you are a single person, and have at least $2,300 in the types of expenses listed above, or are married filing jointly with $3,400 worth, you should take a closer look at the possibility of filing a 1040 Form and Schedule A. You just might save yourself some money. Deductible interest expenses include home mortgage, personal loans, business loans, install ment plans and “points” if you purchase a home, unless they are for services in connection with getting a VA loan, and bank credit cards. Medical deductions are a little more difficult to claim. You are allowed fees paid to doctors and dentists, eye doctors, chiroprac tors, hospitals, medicine and drugs, but only that portion not reimbursed by insurance. The first half of your medical insurance premium plus medi cine and drugs must be reduced by one percent of your adjusted gross income. Then you add in your doctors and hospital bills and transportation for medical treatment at eight cents per mile and reduce that total by three percent of your adjusted gross income. The remainder is added to the other half of the insurance premium, and that is your deduction. Donations to churches and charities, whether in cash or property, are fully deductible. However, if you purchase a ticket taboo. Russ Gratner FOOD PRICES By Julie Bender, NCSU There’s both good and bad news about food prices in 1980. According to specialists with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, pork and poultry will be even more plentiful this year than last and will continue to be among the best buys at the meat counter. More eggs on the market will be also pushing down egg prices, say economists with the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Now for the bad news. Expect to pay about 11 percent more for food in general this year. That doesn’t take into account such things as freezes, droughts or strikes which would all add to inflation. Most of the increase is expected to be caused by rising costs for transportation, labor and marketing. The highest price hikes are expected for cereals, bakery goods, canned and frozen produce and other processed foods. Also, we’ll be spending more for soft drinks, candy and baked goods because of higher world prices for sugar. Coffee should also be in for another price mark-up early this year, say the economists. ^0ux^ ^exeeattox PROFESSIONAL TAX SERVICE 207 E.
