Winter Birding Sixteen hardy local residents journeyed to the coast recently for a weekend of birding in the vicinity of Morehead City, N.C. The occasion was the winter meeting of the Carolina Bird Club held at the Ramada Inn on Atlantic Beach. After registration, greeting friends and supper there was an informal meeting devoted to the subject of “Bird Banding.” The discussion was led by Dr. Charles Blake of Hillsborough, N. C., whose career has been devoted to the study and teaching of Zoology and this academic background has been coupled with his deep interest in the capture and banding of birds to further the understanding of their life cycles and migratory patterns. The discussion touched on the methods used to capture birds for banding, the various types of bands used and their signifi cance, the use of wing bands and feather dye on the swimmers whose legs are not readily visible, and the recording and complication of data collected from the banding program. The Federal Government and most states require that all banders be licensed to assure accurate identification and data and to assure that standard bands and humane methods are used. A total of seven different field trips were offered and individu als signed up for the trip or trips of their choice at the conclusion of the discussion. Each trip offered the possibility of sighting different types of birds and the different species within these types. One trip was an all-day venture to Cape Lookout, and which held out as an inducement the possibility of sighting a rarity such as a peregrine falcon, brant, devekie or snow bunting. The balance of the trips were more local to the Morehead City area and included such snots as Fort Boone-Blowing Rock area and will be held in late May. As soon as plans are firmed up the details will be made available through the Bulletin. If you have an interest in birds, whether it be as a backyard “feeder watcher” or as an ornithologist you are urged to give serious considera tion to attending the spring meeting. You’ll have a lot of fun and will probably learn some thing as a fringe benefit. — Reporter The Bulletin 10c Per Copy Bonus Food' Savings For You During Our 59th Anniversary Sale PRICES GOOD THROUGH SAT.
