President Carter has sent a
Marine assault force toward the
Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea as
a show of force aimed at the
Soviet Union. The Marines will be
the first ground forces in their
region since World War II.
The International Olympic
Committee rejected Tuesday

Moscow games be moved,
postponed or canceled because of
the Soviet invasion of Afghanis

The U. S. Defense Property
Disposal Service opened more
than 2,000 bids Tuesday for
nearly 3,000 surplus wartime
escape and evasion kits that
contain gold coins, trinkets and
jewelry. The government expects
to realize more than $3 million for

Grass Fire
The Tryon Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a grass
fire in Pacolet Valley Tuesday
about 4:30 p.m. The fire was
between Edney’s Garage and E.
L. Bruce’s home. The fire was
stopped just before it reached the
large sawdust pile at Edney’s.

Meets Tonight
The Green Creek PTA will
meet tonight (Thursday) at 7
p.m. in the school auditorium.

Christmas Trees?
A second income from growing
an agricultural crop is feasible
for many families in Polk County.
On Thursday, February 21 at 7:30
p.m. in the agricultural building
in Columbus, the Polk County
Agricultural Extension Service
will sponsor an agricultural
workshop to discuss two crops
which could mean extra income
for your family.
Land requirements, market
potential, labor requirements,
proper cultural practices and
other necessary information will
be discussed on growing ginseng
and Christmas trees.

Pass The Crop Please
A relay race on horseback will
be a unique feature at the Block
House Races, Saturday April 5. It
is open to a team of five,
members of a local hunt in
formal hunting attire. They will
be required to pass the crop four
times during the mile and a
furlong race. It’s a trophy and
two hundred dollars to the
winning team and one hundred
dollars to the runner-up.
A spokesman said it should be
great fun and excitement for
riders and spectators.
Parking reservations for
members can be made now at the
Riding and Hunt Club office from
9 until 12. Reservations for
non-members go on sale March 1.
