No official weather report for
Tuesday, but it was windy and
cold. Wednesday was sunny and
warmer.
The Tryon boys basketball
team lost in the District 8 finals
Tuesday night 51-50 to Cullowhee
in double overtime. They have
had a remarkable season. After
dropping their opening game to
Asheville School, they won their
next 23 games before losing to
Cullowhee. They won the regular
season Appalachian Conference
and the tournament. They feel
that they should have won
Tuesday, but just couldn’t get the
ball to drop for them. They have
been so sensational this year that
we expect every shot to fall and it
just doesn’t work that way all the
time. They played hard Tuesday
night and gave it all they had. A
disappointment, but the players
and Coach Mike Pearson have
had an outstanding season. The
school and the community are
proud of them.
“The Chalk Garden” opens
tonight at 8:30 at the Fine Arts
Center. The play, directed by
Dean Campbell, will also be
given at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday.

Cullowhee Boys
Beat Tryon 51-50
In Two Overtimes
The Cullowhee Rebels upset the
Tryon Tigers 51-50 Tuesday night
at Tuscola High School in the
finals of the District 8 Class A
Playoffs. The Tigers had won 23
straight games and were the
defending district champions.
Cullowhee will advance to the
State Tournament in Garner next
week.
Cullowhee’s 6’6” Jeff Cloud got
free for a layup with 9 seconds
remaining in the double overtime
to give Cullowhee their 51-50 win.
Tryon still had an opportunity to
win as they called for a time out
and then called another time out
with 4 seconds left. Tony
Cunningham’s 18 foot shot hit the
rim and bounced away. Cunning
ham had hit the basket earlier to
put the Tigers in front 50-49.
It was that kind of game. Both
teams led during the game and
the momentum went one way and
then another. The first quarter
was 13-13, Cullowhee led 30-28 at
half and Tryon led 40-38 at the end
of the third quarter. The
regulation game ended 48-48 as
Tryon killed the clock the final
two minutes and then Cunning
ham just missed a shot and
Warfield Kirkendoll followed and
it too failed to drop. In the first 3
minute overtime, Cullowhee got
the center tip and held the ball
until 13 seconds were left and
called time out. The Tigers stole
the ball and with 6 seconds called
time out. Cunningham missed a
