Tryon Daily Bulletin, Mon.. Mar. 24, 1980 Attend Assembly The State Assembly of Church Women United at Hickory, N. C. was attended by Mrs. Roy Batie and Mrs. Margaret Woodburn, representing the Tryon-Colum bus area of Church Women United. They report that the World Day of Prayer on March 7 at the Congregational Church in Tryon was an inspirational service for all who attended. Bible readings, appropriate to the theme of the day, “Respons ible Freedom” from the Old and New Testaments were read by Mrs. Esther Robinson, subsitu- ting for Mrs. Frank Brown. Futher highlights of the service were the readings and commen tary by Mrs. Ralph Junker on three responsibilities of everyone today: responsibility to self, family and society; also, the observations of Mrs. C. Lewis Wrenshall about the religious climate of Thailand today. The Wrenshalls returned only a few days before from an extensive tour which included Thailand. The World Day of Prayer service had been written by women of Thailand for observances throughout the world. A report of the accomplish ments of Church Women United during this past year was given Columbus Decorating Center fs now having a 30% OFF Sale on selec ted wallcovering books. No. 9, Mill Spring, 894-3217. by Mrs. Woodburn as follows: approximately $626.00 for the blanket fund for the relief of refugees and disaster victims in this country and abroad, a special offering of $225.00 collected at a sacrificial meal for World Hunger, contributions to the Christian Women Prisoner’s Fund, to the local sheltered workshop, and to the migrant ministry both locally and at the state level. Not all gifts were monetary but health kits, school kits, and baby layettes were assembled under the leadership of Mrs. Robert Weaver, Church World Service Chairman of Church Women United, all and well over 100 pounds of these articles were sent to a central distribution point. From there they are sent where needed throughout the world. Many women from the twelve participating churches of this area have contributed their talents to make the work of Church Women United a truly ecumenical service. Church Women United will observe May Fellowship Day on Friday, May 2 at St. John’s Catholic Church. Women of every faith are invited to attend. — Reporter NOT EXPERIENCED in any trade?
