The Cosmic Reporter “Locating the Planets in April” By Tim Linder Seven of the planets will be visible during April. These planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. All of these planets will be easy to find with the exception of Uranus and Nep- . Here’s where to find the planets this month: MERCURY will be visible all month but it will be easiest to find during the first half of April. Look for Mercury very low over the eastern horizon about 20-25 minutes before sunrise. VENUS is now high in the west at sunset. Venus is of magnitude -4.1 and is the brightest object in the sky except for the sun and the moon. At mid-month Venus sets four hours after the sun and is half full as seen through a telescope. MARS is at magnitude 0 and is high in the east at sunset. Mars is in the constellation of Leo along with Saturn and Jupiter. On April 24th there will be a spectacular conjunction of the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the star Regulus. All five of these bright objects will be close together in the same constellation. JUPITER is in the constella tion of Leo and is high in the east at sunset. At magnitude -1.9, Jupiter is the second brightest planet in the sky. Jupiter’s four brightest “Galilean” moons can be seen with the aid of a telescope or a steadily held pair of binoculars. SATURN is now of magnitude 0.9 and likes Mars and Jupiter it is in the constellation of Leo. Look for Saturn well up in the east after sunset. Saturns rings are now almost edge-on as seen from Earth and are invisible in all but large telescopes. Observers with telescopes may still be able to see a dark band across the disk of Saturn. This dark band is the shadow of the rings against the ball of the planet. URANUS is now of magnitude 5.8 and is in the constellation of Librae. At about 2 a.m. look for Uranus high in the south about 4*2 degrees south of the star Gamma Librae. NEPTUNE is in the constella tion of Ophiuchus and is of magnitude 7.7. About 2 hours before sunrise look for Neptune high in the south about 2 Mi degrees northwest of the star Xi Ophiuchi. To find Uranus and Neptune you will need binoculars and a good starmap.
