Tryon Daily Bulletin, Tues., Mar. 25, 1980 Communication In the early morning hours on Sunday, the educational buidling of Columbus Baptist Church caught fire. Because of the diligence and hard work of our policeman and fireman and rescue squad major damage was limited to one area of the church. We would like to express our deepest appreciation for their assistance to the following people: — David Satterfield, highway patrolman, who first noticed smoke in Columbus and alerted others of a possible fire. — Dock Wilson, Columbus policeman, who searched for and located the fire at the church. — The Columbus and Tryon Fire Departments, who worked together to bring the fire under control and prevent its spreading to other parts of the building. So many times, it takes a tragic event to make us truly appreciate the service given us by our police and fire departments. We at Columbus Baptist Church were reminded in a dramatic way of their value to our community. Thanks to them, our church still stands. It is our hope that this experience will teach us not to take for granted those people who so courageously protect our lives and property.
