As you enter the triangle at the intersection of 108 and 176 a sign reads: “$200 maximum fine for litter.” Collecting two hundred bags of litter within walking distance from the sign on 176, 108 and Harmon Field Road represents a lesson in civics, citizenship and good government. The good is the act of the students in collecting the litter. The bad is the act of those who litter and the failure to prosecute them. Simple arithme tic shows that at $200 a bag for 200 bags prosecuting would realize considerable revenue for the community — and might even serve to discourage the litterers. The community owes a vote of thanks to the students and their leaders, Beth Benson, President of the Keywanettes and Bruce Butler, President of the Key Club. Vernon Dusenbury, Superin tendent of Schools, observed: “Picking up four pick up loads of litter within a mile of our campus is a good learning experience for these Keywanettes and Key Club members. A lot of this litter comes from adults and we hope that when these students become adults they will know not to litter. Education teaches us that the quality of life around us reflects the quality of life within us.” These high school students have thrown a challenge to the adults. Look at the shoulders of the roads you pass-how obvious is the litter? Who will clean it? Who will see to it that there is no more litter? As a first step, look at South Trade Street to the SUte line. “Operation pride” says Saturday is the big day to start PAYING CASH For Gold and Silver WE ARE STILL PAYING TOP PRICES FOR: •Class Rings •Wedding Bands •Gold Coins *Gold Jewelry •Dental Gold Come by for a quotation.
