Tuesday was cloudy and cool Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. of New York dropped its prime interest rate to 184 percent. Two Spartanburg residents were killed Monday evening in separate incidents involving Spartanburg County Policemen. A rhubard at a softball game between Laurel Creek and Fountain Inn, S. C. ended with an umpire being shot to death, another man nursing broken bones and another shot in the buttocks Investigators said between 8 and 15 shots were fired as several players drew pistols The shooting according to Lt. Earl Barnett of Greenville County Sheriff’s Department broke out when an umpire made a “bad call.” President Carter traveled to Texas Monday to visit men injured in last week’s ill-fated attempt to rescue the American hostages in Iran. Today from 12 to 6 is the Polk County Library Book Sale. Thursday the Appalachian Conference tennis tournament will be held at Harmon Field and on the 4-H courts in Columbus Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “A Shot in the Dark” Continued On Back Page Holy Cross Calls New Rector The Vestry of the Church of the Holy Cross has called the Rev. James 0 Reynolds to become the rector effective July first He is presently rector of Augustine Parish. Chesapeake City. Maryland where he has been for the past ten years. Prior to that he was the rector of Immanuel Church. Newcastle, Delaware. He has been chaplain of St. Andrew’s School, Middletown. Delaware and serv ed in the United States Navy during World War II. He is a graduate of Amherst College and of General Theologi cal Seminary with a degree of Master of Divinity. 4-H Courts In Use Thursday The 4-H Tennis Courts in Columbus will be in use Thursday during the Appalachian Confer ence Tournament. Most of the tournament will be held at Harmon Field DEMOCRATIC RALLY FRIDAY AT 7:30 There will be a Democratic Rally Friday, at 7:30 p m. at the Tryon Elementary School Cafeteria Candidates will be present and refreshments will be served The public is invited Mrs Charles Johnson. Mrs. Scott Ernest and Miss Laurie Ernest of Houston, Texas are visiting Mrs. Ben Douglas in Tryon. Civic League Meets Friday The Civic League of Landrum will meet Friday. May 2 at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center. Mrs. Ralph Cash, a retired missionary, who is making her home in Landrum, will be the guest speaker. Her topic will be “Amusing Events in Her World Travels.” Since this will be the last meeting until September, it is requested that all members be present. Guest and visitors are welcome Barbecue For George Bush The Buncombe County Repub lican Party has announced plans for a fund raising barbeque to be held Saturday, May 3, 1980 at the Great Smokeys Hilton featuring GOP Presidential Candidate George Bush. On Saturday, May 3. 1980 at 6:00 p.m. local and regional republicans will gather at the Great Smokeys Hilton for an old fashion barbeque. Entertainment will be provided by The Stony Creek Boys, a blue grass group from Weaverville and square dancing will be performed by the Pisgah View Ranch Dancers. Former Ambassador Bush will arrive at the Hilton at about 7:00 p m. for a reception hosted by the Buncombe County Republican Party. Following the reception he will address the local Republi cans at the barbeque. New Arrival Dr. and Mrs. Steve Hayes of Cherryville, N. C. are parents of a daughter, Michelle Aileen, born April 21st. Michelle, who weighed 6 lbs. 6 ozs has a sister, Stephanie, age 3 and a brother, Brian, age 5. The maternal grandmother is Mrs. Ernest Ritchey of Cherry ville and the paternal grandpar ents are the Rev. and Mrs. R. B. Hayes of Taylor, S. C., formerly of Tryon. Dr. Hayes, a 1963 graduate of Tryon High School and a 1971 graduate of the Medical- University of South Carolina at Charleston, is a family practice doctor in the emergency room at Lincoln County Hospital. Pre-School Orientation A reminder to parents of students in Polk County who are entering school for the first time this fall: Orientation will be held at the following schools beginning at 9:00 A.M. Monday, May 5, Green Creek School. Wednesday, May 6, Mill Spring School. Friday, May 9. Saluda School. School and health clinic personnel will be on hand to register students and to advise about necessary immunizations. Bring immunization records to the meetings.
