From None To Nine In Two Years Can you imagine how a comparatively small county as Polk can be so fortunate as to have NINE students selected to study and live abroad for a year under the sponsorship of the American Field Service? Four students have already been notified of their destination. They are Sharon Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilkins of Hickory Grove, Thailand; Sherry Horne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Horne of Green Creek, Brazil; Martha Brady, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Brady of Tryon, Denmark; and Colleen Taylor, daughter of David Taylor of Columbus, Peru. The other five students are waiting for their assignment. They are Jenna Buckner, daughter of Mrs. Tegwen Buckner of Tryon; Kelli Sheehan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stokes Sheehan of Camp obello; Courtney Page daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Page of Columbus; Bart Meroney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meroney of Columbus and Aileen Teal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Teal, Tryon. Community support in money, time and concern has been outstanding in the past. Without the assistance of so many hard working people, AFS could not have grown so quickly in Polk County. Now comes the time to expand the present committees and initiate new ones and also to offer an opportunity for more people to serve. Some of these committee titles are Americans Aboard, Host Selection, Short Term Exchange, Transportation, Soc ial and Regional Screening. Jf these titles sound unfamiliar complete details and general information will be available at the Polk County Chapter of American Field Service meeting on May 8, at the Polk County Library in Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
