Good Start For Youth Gardens Tryon Youth Gardens I. made an excellent start tn., spring, it was announced at a meeting Thursday of the Youth Gardnes Council of the Carolinas at the home of the Chairman, Mrs. Edward W. Russell. Ground has been prepared and staked out at the Tryon High School and already nearly thirty children have asked to partici pate. reported Joseph P. Wray, Advisor to the Council. Douglas Roach, of the Agricul tural Extension Service, is giving the children an introduction to gardening and is helping them to plan their gardens, said Mr. Wray and Lewis C. Wrenshall has agreed to give some gardening demonstrations in the field Second graders have already announced their determination to establish a patch of Irish potatos. and parent participation in the gardens has been encouraged by gardening agreements" signed by both parents and children. Mr Wray reported a new development: several requests for family plots have already been received; and a few more family garden spots measuring fifteen by twenty feet are still available on a first-come first- served basis. These plots are in demand by families whose yards are too small or too shaded to grow worthwhile vegetables. Wildlife Biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will make another visit to Columbus to distribute wildlife planting materials. Mr. Scruggs will be at the Polk Soil & Water Conserva tion District Office in Columbus on Friday. May 16, from 11:00 a m. to 1:00 pm. The planting material will be passed out free while the supply lasts. Individuals who have already made application for the material may pick up their orders at this time. As before. Mr Scruggs will be available to answer quextions concerning the improvement of wildlife habitat on your property.
