May 19, 1980 Tennis News In the Regional Tennis finals at Hickory’, South Mecklenburg’s Wayne Hearn defeated Ashe- villes Doug Maynard 6-0, 6-4 and in doubles South Mecklenburg’s Jamie Langford and Ben Terrell defeated Myers Park’s Marcelo Halpern and Brian Furr 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Poag is the valedictorian and Miss Mary Kathleen West, the salutatorian Brewer-Lanning Mrs. Roger Lynn Lanning Miss Emily Jane Brewer and Roger Lynn Lanning were united in marriage Saturday. May 17 in the sanctuary of Tryon Presby terian Church at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend John Douglas Smith performed the ceremony. The service music was provided by Hans Vigeland, the organist at Tryon Presbyterian Church. The bride, given in marriage by her father, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryon J Brewer of Route 1, Tryon. She is a 1978 graduate of Polk Central High School and has recently complet ed the Associate of Arts degree at Isothermal Community College. She plans to continue her education at Wofford College in the fall. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lanning of Columbus. He is a 1977 graduate of Polk Central High School and is employed by Lyman Printing and Finishing. Attending the bride, as her maid of honor was Miss Virginia Baird of Tryon. SS^iXn^.S c Landrum Boys 9th In Class A State Track Meet The Landrum High School boys track team was 9th with 24 points in the State Class A Track Meet Thursday at Columbia. Tim Thompson of Landrum was first in the 100 meters in 11.0 and second in the 200 meters. Danny Jackson was second in the 2-mile run. Terry Sanford, former North Carolina Governor, now presi dent of Duke University, has been elected to the Christ School board of directors. His son graduated from Christ School in 1970. Two Going To S. C. Girls State Julie Collins and Teresa Louise (Lucy) Little will represent Landrum High School at the 34th Annual Palmetto Girls’ State being held the week of June 9—15 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Their attendance is being sponsored by the Thermal Belt Business and Professional Women’s Club. Miss Collins is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert L. Collins of Landrum and Miss Little is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dever Little, also of Landrum. Jody Brown, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Joe E. Brown of Landrum, and Rhonda Sprouse, daughter of Mrs. Sybil Cox of Campobello, have been chosen as alternates. The selections were based on definite interest in government, leadership, character, honesty, scholarship, cooperativesness, community participation and service activities. Palmetto Girls’ State is a practical application of Americanism and good cizitenship. The Thermal Belt Business and Professional Women's Club is also sponsoring the sending of Denise Radford, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Richard Radford of Tryon and Jewel Robert, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Holbert of Rt 1. Polk County Homebuilders Association The regular montly meeting of the Polk County Homebuilders Association was held Tuesday, May 13th at the Hearthstone Inn. The Board of Directors met at 6:30 p.m., and the regular members arrived at 7:30. The membership certificates were given to the members After dinner, the guest speak ers from Georgia Pacific and Johns-Manville, brought a film and information on different types of roofing. There were 31 present for the dinner. GREENS By Julie Bender, NCSU Edible wild greens such as poke, dandelion and cress are sometimes bitter. To remove the bitter taste, parboil the greens, drain them, and then return to the boiling water and cook until tender, recommend NCSU agricultural extension specialists. Young and tender wild greens can also be used as salad greens, they add. Be sure to check them carefully and wash well. BAGGING IT UP By Julie Bender, NCSU When you get to the checkout counter at the supermarket, unload the heavier items first. Save the fragile and perishable foods until last to avoid damage on automatic conveyor belts. Be sure to ask that frozen foods be packed in a extra bag if there will be a delay in getting them home.
