IS BUCK NITE 859-6811 No-Till Planting On The Increase In Polk County Several Polk County farmers have made plans this year to plant at least some of their crops using the no-till or conservation tillage system. This is a system whereby crops are planted directly in the residue of a previous crop or a cover crop. Conservation tillage is one of the best practices to help in the control of soil erosion but there are also several other reasons why farmers are turning to it. Conservation tillage allows plant ing on wetter soils than conventional tillage and this means farmers can get into their fields sooner to plant. Soil moisture is conserved and this can help increase yields during dry years. Also, there is less runoff after a rain when using no-till and so more of the water says in the field where it can be used by crops. Conservation tillage saves time and money by reducing the number of trips necessary in planting a crop to one or two. Conventional tillage usually takes five or more trips across the field. Production costs are therefore normally reduced when the no-till system is used. In Polk County, landowners can receive up to $10 per acre cost-share assistance through the Agricultural Conservation and Stabilization Service for planting crops the no-till method.
