Williams _ HOSPITAL ASKS FOR ULTRASOUND EQUIPMENT Howard H. Spika, President of St. Luke’s Hospital, Inc., Colum bus, N. C., filed notice on June 5, 1980 of intent to incur a capital expenditure for the purpose of acquiring equipment to establish ultrasound services at St. Luke’s Hospital. The ultrasound equip ment is scheduled to become operational in October, 1980 and is estimated to cost $82,000. The project proposal has been submitted to the Certificate of Need Section, Division of Facility Services, North Carolina Depart ment of Human Resources, for review by planning agencies under provisions of the Social Security Admendments of 1972 and Chapter 131, Article 18, of the General Statutes of North Carolina. The planning agencies, in examining the proposal, will seek to determine whether the project is needed, if it can be adequately staffed and operated, whether it is economically feasible within prevailing rate structures, and if it proposes specific cost- contain ment features. A copy of the proposal has been referred to the Western N. C. Health Systems Agency, Inc., Morganton, N. C., for review as required by federal and state law. In its role as coordinator of project reviews under Section 1122 of the Social Security Act and the Certificate of Need Program, the Certificate of Need Section will receive the advice of the regional agency about the conformity of the project to their standards and criteria. The Department will the n decide on the recommendation to be made to the United States Department of Health and Human Services concerning Section 1122. The Department of Human Resources is the final authority with respect to decis ions made under Chapter 131, Article 18, of the General Statutes of North Carolina.
