At commencement on May 18, Miss Payne was named recipient of the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, which is presented to the graduating senior who best displays the “characteristics of mind and conduct that show a spirit of love and helpfulness to others.” During her four years at Wofford, she was named to Blue Key national honor fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was a member of the Pre-Law Society and Economics Society. She served on various commit tees on the Campus Union, the student government organization and was elected Homecoming Queen in the fall of 1979.
