Trade St, Tryon, N. C. “The Eagle Has Landed” When Jack Higgins wrote his thrilling novel “The Eagle Has Landed", he really didn’t have Tryon Country Club in mind, but T.C.C. golfers must have taken him seriously. On Sunday. June 8, Lois Spika, playing with her husband, Howard, had one of the most unusual eagles on record: Playing Tryon’s No. 1 hole, par 5 for women, she used her driver off the tee and then two 5-woods to plunk the ball into the hole. On the same day in the afternoon playing in a mini — “dog-fight”, Tom Burrell, a local golfing star, on the “most unfair par 4 hole in the area", No 6, had his drive wind up under one of the dogwood trees beyond “Cedar Lane." He then punched a 5-iron onto the green and into the cup for a deuce, a Bald Eagle. Monday, June 9, Nancy Sendel- back, playing with her husband, Norm, used a driver and a 3-wood to the green on No. 1, and sank her 3-foot putt for an eagle 3, which was a perfect start for her best 9-hole score of 43. To fill the “eagles nest", Tom Burrell on Monday performed a miracle on Tryon’s No. 2, using a driver, 2-iron and a wedge for a 3 on this par 5 hole. “This Was The Week That Was" at T.C.C.! - Reporter Thermal Belt Bridge Winners at the Thermal Belt Men’s Duplicate Bridge Monday.
