Volunteers Honored One hundred and twenty-six volunteers along with staff and faculty members of the Tryon Elementary School gathered on Thursday. June 5, at 12:00 noon in the dining room of the Tryon Elementary- School to honor the citizens of the community who have volur^ured their time to enrich the”curriculum of the Tryon Community Schools. The buffet luncheon was prepared by the faculty and by Charles Stafford. School Food Service Director, and his staff. The floral decorations on the tables were hand made by the students of the third grade under the direction of their teacher, Jean Preston. Joe Wray. Community Schools Coordinator, welcomed the group and expressed his appreciation together with that of Superinten dent. Vernon Dusenbury and the administrative staff, for their contribution to the students and to the school. Lee Mueller, Volunteer Ser vices Director, thanked the volunteers for enriching the curriculum and helping the students improve their skills, and in addition thanked them for their friendship and support which not only is an encouragement to the students but to the teachers and staff as well. Volunteers were involved in the following areas and activities: Tutoring in the Primary Reading Program, Children's Theater Festival, Health Screening, The Reading Is Fundamental Pro gram (R.I.F.), which is a story hour and book distribution program for pre-schoolers and primary students, Youth Garden ing, Play Care an after school child care program. Gallery of Local Lore, Peace Fare, a Model United Nations. Rug Hooking field trips, special programs on travel. Youth Choral Group; Halloween Carnival, Musical groups during Heritage Week, P.T A. activities, In-school theater production, athletic coaching. Health Fair, teaching via puppetry, speech therapy and psychological counselling. Mr. Wray concluded the afternoon by presenting each volunteer with a handsome certificate of appreciation with the volunteer’s name inscribed on the certificate, a gift from Governor Hunt and personally signed by him. Govenor Hunt is a strong advocate of strengthening the schools of North Carolina through the use of volunteers and has made special effort to recognize outstanding achieve ment in the area of Community Schools Projects in the state.
