TREK- THG MOTION PICTURE Jody Barber Tells Of Early Hendersonville Jody Barber of the Henderson ville Camera-Card Shop delight ed the Saluda Community Club, Thurs., July 17, after a carry-in dinner, with slides and lecture on “My Town — Your Town.” Mrs. Barber was a special guest. Mr. Barber’s ancestors, he stated, coming down from Pennsylvania could have taken an easier route — to the east or to the west — but chose, rather, the mountain area thus arriving in Hendersonville where he is now the 4th generation of this family. In 1838 the power struggle was not political; instead, it was the River Group and the Road Group. The first court House of 1845, the first store of M. M. Shepherd, and the Barber sky-light shop for taking pictures were shown. Judge King laid out the area for the city and soon afterward came the first city transit system. The Southern Railroad was first built to Saluda and then to Henderson ville and at one time there were 14 trains passing through the area daily. The first private school, the Court House rebuilt (1904), the four banks, and the 3 pharmacies (Old Rose, Hunters’ and Justice), the original sites of churches, and schools for advanced training such as Fassifern. Blue Ridge School for Boys, and Judson College were shown and describ ed As more and more people came into Hendersonville, many hotels sprung up. some being very elegant. An effort of the city fathers to connect Crystals Springs to the city by boats on canals finally- failed and the great Fleetwood Hotel became only a dream as the great depression of 1925 came about Some promoters attempt ed to sponsor the Jack Dempsey fights here, but this was unsuccessful Club business followed and reports given. — Reporter Tryon Daily Bulletin, Friday, mustang.
