NCSD Tames Tigers 34-12 Using the big play, the Bears from North Carolina School of the Deaf spoiled the opening game of the Tryon Tigers with a 34-12 win Friday night at Harmon Field. The game didn't start that way as Tryon's Robert Nelon fell on the opening kickoff on the Bear 35. Or the first play from scrimmage QB Walter Mize hit Todd Constance behind the NCSD secondary and Constance went the rest of the way for the TD. John Metcalf’s placement was good but Tryon was penalized 5 yards and then the next placement was no good and it was 6-0. The Bears took the ensuing kickoff and retured it to the 29. Four plays gave the Bears a first down on the 41 Then Bobby Robbins took a pitchout around left end and went 59 yards for a TD. Jim Byrd's placement was good and it was 7-6, in favor of the Bears. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the half Things changed in the second half. NCSD’s Curtis Wright took the opening kickoff and raced 85 yards up the middle without a Tiger touching him. Byrd's placement was good and it was 14-6. The Tigers bounced right back. Barry Morgan returned the kickoff to the 35. Jimmy Clement picked up good yardage in three carries to put the ball on the Bear's 48. A Mize to Nelon pass lost a yard and then Mize hit Morgan deep in Bear territory and Morgan took it to the one. Two plays lost two yards and then Constance banged over left tackle for three yards and a TD. Mize was stopped short on a QB sneak and it was 14-12. The Bears scored their next TD on a 32-yard pass play from QB Buddy Hill to Stacey Rogers. Byrd’s placement was wide and it was 20-12. The Tigers took the kickoff and drove to NCSD's 31 Landrum Blanks Polk Central 22-0 The Landrum Cardinals bang ed out a 22-0 win over the Polk Central Patriots Friday night at Landrum. The Cardinals, who couldn't get their offense un iracked against Chapman the week before, ran for 225 yards while its defense held Polk Central to only 1 yard on the ground. Landrum scored twice in the second quarter. Johnny Wilkins scored on a 9 yard run and then Sammy Doar ran the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 Just before the half ended Terry Waldrop ran over from the three and Wilkins ran the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0. In the third quarter the Cardinals struck again as Wilkins scored from 9 yards out to make it 22-0. Landrum Coach Steve Coley was proud of the way his team performed. He said the entire defensive unit played a bang-up game. Tim Waldrop had three interceptions, one fumble recov ery and five tackles Mark Miller at linebacker had six tackles. The Cardinals are now 1-1 and will travel to Chesnee Friday. Polk Central Coach Ken Brumley said that the Patriots were flat and that Landrum wanted to win more than they did. He said that Landrum played a fine game. Friday Cherryville conies to Polk Central. Cherry ville has been picked to win their conference. Polk Central is now 1-2. Visitors are welcome. 2 Peterson Wins Senior Golf Pete Peterson of Red Fox CC defeated Gene Godin of Etowah Valley CC on the third hole of a playoff Saturday to win the Blue Ridge Seniors Championship at airfield Mountains CC. Peterson and Godin finished the first 18 holes of the tournament with 75s to force the playoff.
