Union members at seven
Roanoke Rapids mills
overwhelmingly accepted a
contract Sunday with textile
giant J. P. Stevens & Co., ending
one of the nation's longest, most
bitter organizing struggles. But
the textile firm’s chairman,
Whitney Stevens, made it clear
that the new relationship doesn’t
mean Stevens will stop fighting
unions.
Iraqi infantry forces backed by
a heavy artillery barrage
apparently entered the outskirts
of Abadan Sunday and cut it off
from the rest of Iran.
The mountains of Western
North Carolina were full of
visitors over the weekend with
bumper to bumper traffic. There
were no available motel rooms
west of Hickory according to
reports. The fall colors are
peaking now at the higher
elevations.
The World Series continues
tonight in Philadelphia with the
Phillies holding a 3 to 2 game
advantage over the Kansas Citv
Royals. 1
