The Tryon, Columbus, Landrum and Green Creek Fire Departments have all been called out to fires Fortunately most of them have not caused much damage. Watch cigarettes, matches, trash burning, etc. until we get a good rain. The 96th Congress is trying to end the wrangling over a proposed $10,000 pay raise for senators and representatives that is holding up its adjournament The pay increase - which would also raise the salaries of 34,000 top-level government employees — is attached to an omnibus spending bill. Denis Radford, a senior at Tryon High School has been named a semi-finalist in the E. B. Kennedy Scholarship competion at Erskine College. The E. B Kennedy Scholarships are the first full academic merit scholarships to be given at Erskine College. They cover tuition, room and board, books and other fees. Deniseis the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Continued On Back Page Gets Scholarship Melvin Timothy Corbett, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Corbett of Tryon is among outstanding scholars at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying this year under the prestigious James M. Johnston Scholarship program. The James M. Johnston Scholarship program is the largest scholarship program in the University of North Carolina system and the state in amount of money awarded and number of students enrolled. It provides $600,000 each year for UNC-CH students and for students in special programs at UNC-G and N. C. State. The James M. Johnston Scholarship program has 415 students enrolled at the three participating campuses. In the program's 11 years of existence, 1609 students have received Johnston scholarships Fires The Landrum Fire Department was called to a grass fire on Blackstock Road Friday night. Saturday night they answered a Mil to a small grass fire on Landrum Mills Road. Sunday afternoon they answered a fire at a mobile home occupied by Mrs. Clara P. Campbell on McClure Hill opposite Tryon Lumber There was some smoke damage and a small portion of the floor was burned. Childbirth Education St. Luke’s Hospital will be offering Childbirth Education Classes starting Monday, January Sth at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and continue for 7 weeks al St. Luke's Hospital for parents due in March, April and May. 1981. The purpose of these classes is to familiarize expectant parents with the process of labor and delivery, relaxation and breathing tenchiques for use in labor and delivery, tour the labor and delivery area, and begin thinking about what it will be like to be a parent. Any interested persons are welcome to attend. The classes are specifically designed for expectant mothers and fathers in the last two to three months of pregnancy. Please wear pants and bring a blanket and two pillows for use during the exercise period. To register, please call Cam Lawrence, R. N. at St. Luke's Hospital on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 7:00 a m. and 11:00 a.m. Mobile Home Is Burned The Green Creek Fire Department was called to a fire early Monday morning to the mobile home of Mr and Mrs Marty Reynolds in the Melvin “ section. According to reports the home was destroyed and all contents were lost. Fires The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department answered two fires over the weekend. Saturday night they were called to a woods fire near Chester Hudson's house near St. Luke's Hospital. The fire was discovered by a neighbor, Wayne Black, and the fire burned about a ''4 acre including a number of azaleas that had been planted in the woods. Sunday afternoon about 1-45 p m they were called to Donald Williams, house on Skyuka Road near 1-26 where a woods fi re burned about 2 acres.
