sunny winter day.
President Carter bid farewell
to the nation Wednesday night
with a warning that the danger of
nuclear annihilation is growing
and the selfish desires of special
interests are gaining influence in
the halls of government. He cited
his deep commitment to the
struggle for human rights and the
necessity of protecting the
environment.
Carroll Wright, the former
Brevard football coach who
guided the Blue Deveils to a 50-14-
2 record before resigning last
year to join his family's private
business in Swain County, has
accepted a position as athletic
director and head football coach
at West Henderson. West
Henderson's Burney Drake (Who
was at Polk Central) recently
resigned.
Gov. Richard W. Riley has
proclaimed Saturday as Cowpens
Bicentennial Celebration Day in
South Carolina.
The Landrum fall sports
banquet is tonight at 7 at the high
school.

Commissioners Meet
Monday at?
The Polk County
Commissioners will meet
Monday at 7 p.m. at the Mill
Spring School.
Polk School Bd.
Meets Monday
The Polk County School Board
will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in
the Agriculture-Extension
Conference Room. The Board
will go into an executive session
and will reconvene at
approximately 8:30 p.m.
Bus Going
A bus will be going to the
Southern Living Show at the
Merchandise Mart in Charlotte,
N. C. on Wednesday, March 4.
The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from
the Agricultural Extension
Building in Columbus. Cost will
be $14.50 for transporation and
ticket to the show. A deposit of $10
should be made at the Extension
office by Feb. 27 to reserve a seat
on the bus.
The Southern Living Show is
sponsored by Southern Living
Magazine. This year it will
feature landscaped gardens,
fragrant flowers, decorator
rooms, and orchid pavilion,
houseplants, greenhouses, crafts,
home improvement items and
ideas, travel information, lawn
and outdoor furniture and many
more things to help you enjoy the
southern life.
Cross-Stitch Classes
Mrs. Melody Gibson of Saluda
is beginning a counted cross-
stitch class on Tuesday, Jan. 20th
from 6:30 to 9:30 at Grandma's
Attic, which is located over the
bridge on Hwy. 176 toward
Hendersonville. The course is
sponsored by Isothermal
Community College and will
continue for 6 weeks.
Mrs. Gibson owns Grandma’s
Attic and will have all the
supplies. They have some needle-
point kits, embroidery floss and
books with diagrams. In addition
to teaching the class, Mrs. Gibson
does the finishing work on the
items such as pillows, bell pulls
and pictures including framing.

State Line Independent Baptist
Church is having a singing
Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m.
featuring the Justice Family and
the Johnson family. Rev. John
Parker is the pastor. The public
is welcome.
Solar Energy
Exhibition
Governor Jim Hunt has
proclaimed January as Solar
Action Month and tours and
exhibitions have been scheduled
over the State. Saturday at 2 p.m.
the solar heated home of Mr. and
Mrs Rick Pratt of Columbus will
be on exhibit in this area.
Honored
Jesse B. Thornton of Rt. I,
Tryon is employed as a Health
Technician for the Armed Forces
Examining and Entrance Station
Charlotte, N. C. Mr. Thornton
retired from the Air Force April
1967, and began working at the
Armed Forces Examining and
Entrance Station Nov. 1968. He
was selected by his coworkers at
the Charlotte, N. C. Armed
Forces Examining and Entrance
Station as employee of the month
for November 1980. Criteria for
selection were outstanding job
performance and persone)
qualities such as leadership
ablilty and ability to get along
with others. Mr. Thornton’s
efforts contribute significantly to
the efficient processing of
qualified applicants for Military
Enlistment.
Saluda To Have
100th Birthday
The City of Saluda will be 100
years old February 1st.
Appointed to the Centennial
Committee are the Rev Tracy
Lamar, Ann Osborne, Ruth
Anderson and Mrs J B Pace.
They will help plan the 100th
Birthday for the town.
