Tryon Dally Bulletin, Thurs., Jan. 22,1981 The Cosmic Reporter "Auriga and Taurus” By Tim Linder The constellations of Auriga and Taurus are now low in the eastern sky after sunset and by 9 p.m. they are high over the horizon. These two constellations contain many interesting objects which can be seen with the naked eye and binoculars. These objects are M 35, M 36, M 37, M 38, M 45. and M 1. (see starmap accompanying this article! M 35 is a Sth magnitude open star cluster. On a clear night it can be seen with the naked eye as a dim patch of light. Binoculars resolve this cluster into thousands of stars. M 37 is a 6th magnitude open star cluster just below Auriga. Like M 35, M 37 can be seen with the naked eye but binoculars bring out it's true beauty. M 36 is another 6th magnitude open cluster and can be found just above M 37. M 36 is beautiful through binoculars or small telescope. M 38 is just above M 36 and it is of magnitude 7. You may have a little trouble finding this open cluster but if you can locate it try to pick out the stars which outline the form of a small cross iu.se binoculars). M 45 is the famour Pleiades star cluster. It is very bright and will appear as seven stars close together. M 1 is the famous Crab Nebula. It is of magnitude 8 and you will need a telescope to find it. To find the location of the objects described above, see the starmap accompanying this article. In the event they request a 60-day extension to file their return, they have until Jun 15, 1981 to make their contributions, the Internal Revenue Service says. Eligible employees are allowed up to $1,500 in contributions to an IRA. Since penalties are assessed for excessive contributions, taxpayers should carefully calculate the amount of the contribution. Eligible employees are those not covered by qualified pension or retirement plans by their employer. IRAs are also available to non-working spouses of eligible workers, the IRS said. Banks, insurance companies, credit unions and other financial institutions can provide assistance in setting up and maintaining IRAs. IRS Publication 590, "Tax Information on Individual Retirement Arrangements", is available free by using the handy order coupon in the tax packages, or by calling 800-241-3860 toll-free. Some Questions About Child Abuse What is Child Abuse? It's repeated mistreatment or neglect of a child by parents (s) or other guardian resulting in injury or harm. Child abuse maybe physical. verbal, emotional, or sexual. Why do parents abuse their children? Often, it's in reaction to past or present problems or stresses they can't cope with, such as immaturity, unrealistic expectations, unmet emotional needs, frequent crises, lack of "parenting" knowledge, social isolation. poor childhood experiences, drug or alcohol problems. Every parent has the potential to abuse a child at some time. Most abusive parents are "normal". Relatively few are "criminal" or mentally unbalanced Why should I get involved? For your own sake and for the family's sake You can help recognize child abuse and see that it's treated by looking for common signs such as repeated injuries, neglected appearance, disruptive behavior, passive withdrawn behavior, parents who are "super critical", families that are extremely isolated. Suppose I know of or suspect a child abuse case? First, be sure you know the facts — then act! You can be a friend by contacting local service agencies. By law. you cannot be prosecuted for doing so in good faith. This year, there will be thousands of cases of child abuse — parents who habitually abuse their children may very well end up killing them — so now is the time to ACT — Rutherford-Polk Area Mental Services. 500 Carolina Drive. The package is a gold mine of information and generally can be the main source of help when filing the Federal return. In addition to the tax forms themselves, the package contains instructions on how to complete the form step by step In the case of the long form 1040. the instructions contain information on what expenses are deductible and where they are entered on the Schedule A & B. the IRS said In the back of the package is a coupon on which additional forms and publications may be ordered free from the IRS. The package also lists the toll-free number on which North Carolinians can telephone for assistance The package also contains a peel-off return label with the taxpayers's name, address and social security numbers, as well as other information which enables the IRS to process the return more rapidly. This label should be attached to the face of the form at the top where the identification blocks are located If any information, such as address or social security numbers are incorrect, the correction can be made directly on the label Another item in the package is the large IRS- addressed envelope which is roomy enough to hold almost any number of forms and documents that have to be filed. Generally, this envelope can be mailed with a regular 15-cent stamp Tax packages are mailed to those taxpayers who filed returns last year. Anyone not receiving a package may order the forms and instructions by phoning toll- free 800-241-3860 Rev.
