The snow Friday was beautiful.
The snow covered the trees and
ground, but stayed off the
highways. The freezing rain
Sunday morning was something
else. There were a number of
minor accidents in Polk County,
Western North Carolina and
upper South Carolina. The icy
spots on the roads and sidewalks
were treacherous.
Monday morning was sunny
and warmer, but the weatherman
predicted cold temperatures last
night and this morning
President Reagan wants
Congress to raise the national
debt limit by about $50 billion,
from the current $935 1 billion to
$985 billion. Past delays in raising
the ceiling have been caused
primarily by the refusal of most
conservative Republicans in the
House to vote any increase in the
debt limit Democrats in the
House may be reluctant to
deliver a majority of their votes if
Republicans cannot line up a
majority of their own.

Hendon Declines
Calendars,
Saves $7,500
WASHINGTON - U. S.
Representative Bill Hendon, the
11th District Congressman
representing Western North
Carolina, has declined receipt of
his allocation of constituent
calendars from the House. He
decided not to accept the offer of
up to 2,500 97th Congress
calendars, priced at $3 each, in
an effort to do his part in saving
taxpayers’ dollars.
"We're just trying to do what
we can to cut back on what we
consider to be non-essential
government expenses," Hendon
said. "Had every Congressional
office chosen to take this
approach, the total estimated
savings could have amounted to
$3.2 million," Hendon explained
Congressman Hendon has also
sent a letter to the Clerk of the
House of Representatives
requesting that the $7,500 saved
through his denial of the
calendars be returned to the
Treasury.
