The snow Friday was beautiful. The snow covered the trees and ground, but stayed off the highways. The freezing rain Sunday morning was something else. There were a number of minor accidents in Polk County, Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina. The icy spots on the roads and sidewalks were treacherous. Monday morning was sunny and warmer, but the weatherman predicted cold temperatures last night and this morning President Reagan wants Congress to raise the national debt limit by about $50 billion, from the current $935 1 billion to $985 billion. Past delays in raising the ceiling have been caused primarily by the refusal of most conservative Republicans in the House to vote any increase in the debt limit Democrats in the House may be reluctant to deliver a majority of their votes if Republicans cannot line up a majority of their own. The Polk County Historical Continued On Back Page Community Watch Tonight At 7 Another organizational meeting of the Community Watch Program is scheduled for this evening, Tuesday, Feb. 3rd at 7 p.m. at Hickory Grove - Pacolet Hill Club House. A very large number of residents of the area showed their interest in the program by turning out for the first meeting last week. The purpose of tonight’s meeting is to work out details, order signs, select leaders and so forth. Volleyball League In Green Creek The Green Creek Ruritan is sponsoring a church volleyball league. It will be a mixed league and the age limit is 15 and up The entry fee is $20 Any church who would like to participate is asked to send a representative to the meeting at Green Creek Community Building on Saturday, Feb. 7th at 3 p.m. Games-Re-Scheduled The Polk Central-Tryon basketball games were cancelled last Friday due to weather conditions The games have been rescheduled to Sat., Feb. 7th at Polk Central. Nominated Joe Hill, son of Mr and Mrs. Hugh Hill of Columbus, has been nominated for “Actor of the Year" by the Hilton Head Little Theater. Softball Meeting Thursday at7:30 The Tri-County Softball League will meet Thursday at 7:30 at the Tryon City Hall to organize a regular season of softball at Harmon Field for both men and women teams. Officers will be elected for the coming season. For more information contact Joyce Hipp 859-6481. Hendon Declines Calendars, Saves $7,500 WASHINGTON - U. S. Representative Bill Hendon, the 11th District Congressman representing Western North Carolina, has declined receipt of his allocation of constituent calendars from the House. He decided not to accept the offer of up to 2,500 97th Congress calendars, priced at $3 each, in an effort to do his part in saving taxpayers’ dollars. "We're just trying to do what we can to cut back on what we consider to be non-essential government expenses," Hendon said. "Had every Congressional office chosen to take this approach, the total estimated savings could have amounted to $3.2 million," Hendon explained Congressman Hendon has also sent a letter to the Clerk of the House of Representatives requesting that the $7,500 saved through his denial of the calendars be returned to the Treasury. Month Of Heart Valentine Day comes in February with thoughts of Romanace expressed in artistic hearts. February is also the month when the Heart Associations give the community an opportunity to contribute to research and instructional programs developed to fight heart disease.
