on Monday scrapped the Carter
administration's controversial
bilingual education proposals
that would have required the
nation's schools to teach
youngsters in their native,
language. He said the rules
proposed by his predecessor.
Shirley M Hufstedler were
"harsh, inflexible, burdensome,
unworkable and incredibly
costly."
Speed skater Eric Heiden, who
set five Olympic records while
winning five gold medals in the
1980 Winter Olympics, received
the U. S. Amateur Athletic

In Ladies Tennis
The February issue of Tennis
Magazine has the tennis rankings
and Vesta Cornwell and Betty
Warthen were ranked No. 1 in
Women 45 Doubles in the South.
Catherine Parker and
Georgiana Snyder were ranked
No 1 in Women 60 Doubles in the
South
Vesta Cornwell was teamed
with Ella Claire Mays to be
ranked No 1 in Women 45 doubles
in South Carolina They will play
in the National Indoors at Salt
Lake City on Feb 11th
Little League
Meets Sunday
The Polk County Little League
organizational meeting
scheduled for last Sunday was
cancelled due to icy weather It
has been rescheduled for this
Sunday at 3 p m. at the Tryon
Town Hall.
Basketball Clinic
If you have a 5th or 6th grader
in your home who would like to
learn the basics of basketball the
opportunity is available! The
Polk County Recreation
Department is sponsoring a clinic
on Saturday mornings at the
Green Creek Elementary School
Gymnasium Bobby Holbert will
be the head instructor for the
boys from 9 to 10:30 a m The
girls will start at 10:30 a m till 12
noon with Sandra Clary as the
head instructor. The first clinic
will start on Saturday, Feb. 7th.

speak to church groups, civic
organizations, women's clubs
and youth groups'about their
experiences in the U.S. and about
their homelands: Rosita Molina

Chico Vasquez (Costa Rica).
The following Tryon students
are also available to speak about
their experiences this summer in

Meets Monday
The February meeting of the
Polk County Board of Education
will be held on Monday, February
9, at 7:30 p m. at Polk Central
High School Vocational Building,
rooms V-1 & V-2 This is a change
from the regular meeting place
due to the Agriculture/Extension
Conference Room being in use
that night.
Gymnastic Classes

are available for 5 years old and
up Class times are every
