Weather Thursday: high 53,
low 31. Friday morning was cold
with occassional snow flurries.
We are getting out Monday's
paper early Friday so we can go
to the basketball game in
Greensboro.
We have made a lot of changes
of address the past few weeks. A
number of Campobello Rt. 1 and
Landrum Route 1 addresses have
been changed to Rt. 2. Columbus.
Some Tryon addresses have been
changed to Landrum and some
Columbus addresses have been
changed, as well as some on
Landrum Rt. I, 2 and 3. If your
address is not correct now, let us
know.
Postage has gone up now so be
sure you put 18c on the letter you
mail or 12c on the post card.
The calendar says it is spring,
but the temperature hasn't felt
like it yet.

Gilean Smith Wins
Spelling Bee
Gilean Smith, daughter of Mrs.
Gailey Smith of Tryon won the
Tryon Elementary School
Spelling Bee Thursday morning.
She is an 8th grade student and
will represent Tryon in the
Charlotte Observer Spelling Bee
on April 17th. The runner-up was
Norvin Clontz, a 6th grade
student and son of Mr and Mrs.
Norvin Clontz.
The last word spelled correctly
was "Manageable." A total of 271
words were used.
New Business
In Columbus
Sain Realty has opened an office
on Mills Street in Columbus.
Lloyd Sain, owner is a native of
Polk County and has retired from
the U. S. Air Force. He received a
BS-BA Degree from Western
Carolina with a major in Real
Estate. Mr. Sain has been
actively engaged in real estate
for the past three years.
Lapidiary is a hobby Mr. Sain
enjoys and he has beautiful
stones he polished and faceted.
H.G.-P.H. Meeting
The Hickory Grove-Pacolet
Hill Community Club will hold its
regular meeting on Tuesday,
March 24th at 7 p.m.
David Wells will be present to
explain the Hospice Program and
answer questions.

The American Legion Post No.
250 of Tryon will have a Free
Chicken Supper Wednesday at 7
p.m. for current members and
their families. There will be a
social hour from 6:3o to 7:30.
Polk Central
Downs Madison
The Polk Central Patriots
baseball team defeated Madison
9-5 Thursday afternoon at Polk
Central. Catcher Mark Skipper
drove in four runs with a homer
and a single. His three-run homer
in the fifth inning broke open a 3-3
game and he also singled in a run
in the third. Jeff Miller and Eric
Edwards had two hits each for
Polk Central.
Starter Jerry Jackson went the
route for the winners.

Girl Scouting
For Tryon Lions
The Tryon Lions Club will meet
Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Pacolet
River Plantation. The program
will be on "Girl Scouting" and
will include Joan Myers, Bill
Roff, Carolyn Roff, Angefa Clontz
and Aileene Page. Mrs. Myers,
who is from the Pisgah Girl Scout
Council, will show slides and
speak about the camping and
scouting program. Bill Roff, who
has been active in the local
scouting program for about 10
years will talk about adult
participation in scouting His
daughter, Carolyn, a Senior Scout
will tell about her participation in
a wider opportunity last summer.
A Junior Scout, Angela Clontz
will represent her troop and
discuss their activities. Mrs.
Page will explain the local fund
drive that supports the scouting
program for the girls of Polk
County.
Marion Brock is in charge of
the program.

J. B. Jones of Green Creek
celebrated his 92nd birthdav
March 17th. He received a
birthday card from President
Reagan
Randy Burns has been named
to suceed Dean Jones and head
football coach at Chesnee High
School. A native of Cowpens,
Burns is 27 years old, played
football and graduated from
Cowpens High School and
Gardner-Webb College
