President Reagan's decision to
withhold funds for public service
jobs is having a quick and
substantial impact as local
governments around the nation
are being forced to lay off
thousands of workers.
The United Mine Workers and
the soft coal industry tentatively
agreed Monday on a contract
calling for wage and benefit
boosts of 36 percent over the next
three years.
The Town of Tryon street crew
were out washing and sweeping
Trade Street Tuesday morning.
The Town is conducting Clean-up
Week.
Today at 11:45 a.m. and 1:15
p.m. the Daniel Co. is having
informal modeling at The
Hearthstone Inn.
Tonight at 7 o'clock the
American Legion Post No. 250 of
Tryon will have a free chicken
supper for its members and their
families at the Legion Hall.
Thursday at 8 p.m. the
Democratic Precincts in Polk
County will meet at the polling
places or other designated
places. Precinct officers and

Fire
The Tryon Volunteer Fire
Department was called to the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Chris
Johnson Monday afternoon when
a building in the rear of the home
caught fire and burned. It was not
known what caused the fire.
The Southern Railway freight
train beat the fire trucks to the
railroad crossing on Trade Street
and the trucks had to wait for the
train to move through town
before they could proceed to the
fire.
Bud Burns has returned to
Selma, Ala. after visiting his
mother, Mrs. W. A. Burns in
Tryon.
Tryon Rotary
Meets Friday
The Tryon Rotary Club will
meet Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the
Pacolet River Plantation Davis
Kirby will continue his program
on “Egypt."
The Spring issue of Keep North
Carolina Beautiful, Inc. had a
report of the Board of Directors
meeting held in the Lodge of Pine
Crest Inn in Tryon. There was a
picture of Major General Harry
L. Evans who arranged the
program and one of Mrs. Karl
Nesslinger who traced the
history of Pearson Falls Glen and
described some of the species of
flowers, trees, fungi and birds
that may be seen during different
seasons of the year.
Men Gardeners In
Clean-Up Week
The Men’s Garden Club of
Tryon has been assigned Trade
Street (Highway 176) from the
railcrossing at the south end of
town to Country Club Road.
Members will meet Wednesday,
March 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the south
end to distribute bags and assign
areas.
A Break-In
Someone broke in the Tryon
High School Field House Monday
night. The front door was broken
in, but nothing was taken as far
as school authorities can
determine.
Tryon Police Officers Mike
Dukes and Nathan Shields are
investigating the incident.
Two Arrested
Michael Dukes and Nathan
Shields, Tryon Police Officers
arrested Michael McGee and a
juvenile and charged them with
larceny of gasoline from the
truck at Tryon Fuel Supply, Inc.
and simple possession of the
stolen gas.
The arrest was made at 2 a.m.
Tuesday.

Drug Charges
A Saluda, N. C. man was
arrested by county narcotics
agents Saturday and charged
with two drug violations.
David Allen Dempsey, 33, of
Saluda, Route 1, Fork Creek Rd.,
is charged with possession of
cocaine with intent to distribute
and possession of marijuana. He
was arrested at about 3:30 p.m.
Saturday while driving his pick-
up truck near the intersection of
I-85 and Highway 9.
Dempsey was being held in the
county jail late Monday without
bond. — Spartanburg Herald
Trophies On Display
One of the aspects of the Block
House Steeplechase Saturday,
April 4th is the collection of
trophies. This year they will be in
advance display at the Shop of
Carole Thomas from Friday to
race day.
The trophies will be presented
after each race. They are a
supplement, a bonus, to be won in
addition to the purses, which are
in cash. The trophies go to the
owners of the horses. The horses
themselves, get a blanket, A
green blanket trimmed with
green, the Tryon Riding and Hunt
Club colors. The blanket has
name -TRYON on it.
The Block House trophy is a
large antique silver cup to go
with the $10,000 purse for 4-year-
olds over hurdles for two miles.
The Club retains ownership of the
