Comedian Carol Burnett won a
$1.6 million libel judgment
against the National Enquirer on
Thursday for a 1976 gossip item
that said she had a boisterous
run-in with Henry Kissenger in a
Washington restaurant. She said
she would give the money to
charity.
Consumer representatives and
members of Congress assailed
the Reagan White house on
Thursday for accepting $270,000
from oilmen to redecorate the
president's living quarters.
Shiela Macqueen will be at the
Fine Arts Center Tuesday at 2:30
p.m.
Thursday at 8 p.m. the Polk
County Showcase will be at the
Fine Arts Center. There will be
some outstanding local talent and
the proceeds go to the American
Cancer Society. According to an
ad tickets are available at NCNB,
Northwestern Bank. Tryon
Pharmacy and Columbus
Pharmacy.
Saturday is The Steeplechase,
the most colorful of all the events
held in this area. Many people
come back each year and renew

Committee
Meets April 5
The Polk County Recreation
Committee. Inc. will have its
annual meeting on the Sth day of
April at 3 p.m. at the Agriculture
Extension Room. New members
are invited.
Hospice Volunteers
Have Choice Of Jobs
To speed the launching of the
greater Polk County Hospice
program, a wide variety of
volunteer assignments are
available in assisting with
compassionate care for the
terminally ill cancer patients.
The following volunteer jobs
need filling now: (1)
Companionship; (2) Relieving
the patient's primary care
person in the home; (3)
Homemaking skills; (4)
Transportation; (5)
Bereavement follow-up; (6)
Crisis phoning; (7) Clerical
work; (8) Assisting with staff
social get-togethers; (9)
Speakers bureau; (10) Work with
training program (11) Assist with
fund raising program.
On April 2nd a special Hospice
Training Clinic will be held at the
United Methodist Church,
Landrum at 7:00 p m. Interested
persons are asked to call Mrs.

Jefferson Awards
When we heard that Mrs.
Lynne Wood Director of the Polk
County Sheltered Workshop had
won a Jefferson Award for the
Carolinas, we weren’t familiar
with the award. The Jefferson
Awards and the American
Institute for Public Service were
founded in 1973, to honor the
highest ideals and achievements
in the field of public service in the
United States. Through its annual
Jefferson Awards, the Institute
recognizes the dedication,
sacrifice and accomplishments of
individuals serving the American
people and strives to develop new
leadership. There are five Award
Categories: 1. The Greatest
Public Service Performed by an
Elected or Appointed Official;
2. The Greatest Public Service
Performed by a Private Citizen;
3 The Greatest Public Service
Benefiting the Disadvantaged,;
4. The Great Public Service
Performed by Benefiting Local
Communities. Mrs. Wood was
named for The Greatest Public
Serving Benefiting the
Disadvantaged.
The Jefferson Award is a 2'4
inch proof medallion, gold on
silver, featuring a replica of the
Seal of the United States on the
front: “In Recognition of
Outstanding Public Service" on
the reverse. The Jefferson
Awards are donated as a public
service by the Franklin Mint.
At the national level five
thousand dollars is granted for
each award category.
Mrs. Joan Nash Is
Kiwanis Speaker
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
meet Tuesday at 12:45 p m. at the
Pacolet River Plantation The
guest speaker will be Mrs. Joan
Nash, Director of the Polk County
Community Schools Program
Mrs. Nash will discuss the
program which involves the
schools and the community.
David Cromer is in charge of the
program.

Elects Officers
The Democrats of Tryon
Precinct No. 1 elected the
following officers Thursday
night: Chairman Monk Phillips;
1st Vice Chairman. Katherine
Garrett; 2nd Vice Chairman.
Warren Carson; 3rd Vice
Chairman, Margaret Barnette;
Sec.-Treas., Joyce Arledge.
Other members of the committee
are Betty Davis, Eric Fox. Sue
Alewine, Clestelle Dalton and
Ruth Simpson
Delegates elected to the County
Convention were Monk Phillips,
