President Reagan told Congress Tuesday night that his tax and spending cuts are "the only answer we have left" for a sick economy. Regan, in his first public venture since he was wounded by gunfire March 30, thanked his listeners "for your messages, your flowers, and most of all, your prayers — not only for me but those others who fell beside me." Israeli jets shot down two Syrian helicopters Tuesday over Lebanon. Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it lost $439.5 million in the first quarter of 1981, and Chrysler Corp, reported a $298.4 million loss for the same period. Including the $52.7 million loss reported by American Motors Corp, and General Motors $190 million profit, cumulative results for the four U. S. auto companies show a $600 million deficit. Tonight at 8:30 the Tryon Little Theater will present "The Importance of Being Ernest” at the Fine Arts Center. Friday is the Appalachian Tennis Tournament at Harmon Continued On Back Page Polk Foundation Votes Grants Mill Spring School will get $1,500 to help carpet its classrooms Tryon City School will spend $2,000 on a 32K Apple II computer. Rutherford-Polk-McDowell Health District will use $970 for capital expenses in setting up the "Tel-Med" health information project at St. Luke's Hospital. This will allow citizens to dial the hospital and hear a tape on a variety of health topics, list of topics to be made available soon. All these projects are the results of the most recent grants made by the Distribution Committee of Polk County Community Foundation, Inc. Craft Workshop A Craft Workshop will be held May 12 and 13 at the 4-H Center in Columbus. Classes offered will be; Copper Enameling. Quilting, Tatting, Hemstitching, Christmas Star Ornament, Christmas Ornaments, Wheat Weaving. Macarame and Chairbottoming. RED FOX BRIDGE Winners of the four month Winter-Spring Bridge Tournament at Red Fox Country Club wre as follows; 1st., Edith Towle, 2nd., Julia Davis, 3rd., Katherine Davis, 4th., Eleanor Weber, 5th., Margaret Vance. 0. P. Earle PTA No. 1 In State Out of 368 PTA Units in South Carolina, the 0. P. Eagle P.T.A. in Landrum received the “Outstanding Unit/ Award” Friday night at Myrtle Beach. S. C. the presentation was made to Mrs. Ed Anthony, vice president. The 0. P. Earle PTA will now represent South Carolina in the National Contest. The 0. P. Earle PTA also received a 100% Membership award (1 member for each student) and O.P. Earle has 785 members for 610 students. The P T A. also received an award for exceeding last year's membership more than 20%. Some of the other accomplishments during the year were the space program and the visit of astronauts, the RIF program, Star Party, Teacher Appreciation Day, checking eyes and ears with the Lions Club and special activity classes conducted by volunteers on cooking, cameras, etc. Bob Walker has served as president during the past year Region C EMS Council Meeting The Region C EMS Council will meet on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:00 pm. in the office of the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission in Rutherfordton. The meeting is open to the public. In New Home Mr and Mrs. E. D. Maurer, formerly of Largo, Fla. are living in their new home in Green Creek They bought their property from Mrs. Ruth Mullins through the Walker Agency. Mr. Maurer is a native of Wisconsin and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin He was with Honeywell for a number of years and is semi-retired He enjoys puttering around the house and yard and photography. Mrs. Maurer is the former Rachel McClananhan, a native of Minnesota. She is a graduate of Carlton College She enjoys knitting and painting The Maurers have two daughters, Miss Eleanore Maurer of Superior, Wisconsin and Miss Catherine Maurer, a junior at Michigan State University. Hoyt Pack has returned to his home in Columbus after being a patient at Memorial Mission Hospital. Asheville. More Fires In addition to the fire on White Oak Mountain the Columbus Fire Department put out a grass and woods fire on Peniel Road Monday at 1 p m. The fire was along the road near Clarence Cochran's house Tuesday the Columbus firemen were called to Prince Road where a brush fire got out of control and burned about 5 acres
