Sunday was ramp day at
Waynesville and 4,000 to 5,000
ramp eaters and spectators took
part. Five-time champion ramp
eater George Parker of Franklin
took home the honors again. He
polished off 113 of the spicy leeks
by the end of the 15 minute time
limit. C. M. Eargle, who rarely
misses a ramp convention
brought us some back to try.
Severe drought conditions
across most of North Carolina
are threatening crops and
swawning forest fires. Officials
say the worst is yet to come as
below normal rainfall and above
normal temperatures are
predicted through May.
The Boston Celtics came from
behind to defeat the Philadelphia
76ers 91-90 Sunday and win the
series 4-3 and move into the finals
against the Houston Rockets. By
winning the Celtics became only
the fourth team in NBA history to
capture a best-of-seven playoff
series after falling behind 3-1.

Run Well
In the women’s division of the
Spartanburg Spring Fling 5 K
road race, May 2, Carolyn Roff
(21.01) placed second overall,
and Jennifer Lashua (21.34)
placed fourth overall. Carolyn
was first and Jennifer second in
the 13-17 age group.
Spring Concert
A Spring Concert will be
presented by the Tryon City
Schools Band on Wed., May 6th
at the Fine Arts Center at 7:30
p.m

Dan Young Is
DSA Winner
The Polk County Junior
Chamber of Commerce held its
annual awards banquet Friday
night at the Tryon Elementary
School Cafeteria. The highlight of
the evening was the awarding of
the Distinguished Service Award
to Dan Young. Mr. Young is a
physical education and
gymnastic instructor at 0. P.
Earle Elementary School and
coaches the high school
gymnastic program. He
developed the Landrum Youth
Sports Program and in 1980 he
was named the Outstanding
Elementary Physical Educator
in South Carolina. The award was
presented by Mike Collins
President of the Polk County
Jaycees.
Bob Hamrick, a member of the
Landrum Volunteer Fire
Department, was named the
‘‘Young Fire Fighter of the
Year." The award was presented
by John Lawrence
Tom Simpson presented
Frankie Greene of Rt. I,
Columbus the Young Law Officer
of the Year. Officer Greene is a
Dispatcher with the Tryon Police
Department.
The Outstanding Young
Educator award was presented to
Mrs. Phyllia H. Crain of Green
Creek. Mrs Crain, who is a
teacher in 0. P. Earle School is
also a member of the Polk County
Board of Education. Bob

Kiwanis Today
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
meet today at 12:45 p.m at the
Pacolet River Plantation The
program by the Exxon Company
will be entitled, "The Three Es"
— Energy. Environment and
Economics.” Bob Mueller is in
charge of the program
