New Hampshire is visiting Mrs. Willie Sassoon of Tryon for a few days. The Cosmic Reporter Finding The Planets In May" by Tim Linder Four planets are easily visible during May. These planets arc Jupiter. Saturn. Venus and Mercury. Mercury will be most favorably placed for viewing at the end of May than at any other time this year. Jupiter and Saturn are also well placed during May and can be seen for most of the evening. Here's where to locate the planets during May: MERCURY will become visible in the west after sunset toward the middle of the month. Begin looking for Mercury around the 15th when it will be low in the west below the stars Castor and Pollux in Gemini. Mercury will be a little higher in the sky each night until May 23th when it will begin moving back toward the horizon. This will be the best chance all year to gel a look at elusive Mercury. VENUS cannot be seen at the beginning of the month as it is too close to the sun. By the end of the month Venus, al magnitude - 3.4. can be found very low over the western horizon below Mercury soon after sunset. Watch brilliant Venus climb higher and higher into the evening sky over the next few months. JUIPTER is now of magnitude 1.8 and is very high in the south at sunset. Jupiter sets shortly after midnight Through a telescope Jupiter's cloud belts and four brighest moons can be seen SATURN is now in the constellation of Virgo and is located only about two degrees east of Jupiter. At magnitude 1 Saturn is about two magnitudes dimmer than Jupiter. Saturn's ring system and brightest moon Titan can be seen easily through a small telescope and if conditions are extra clear you may be able to pick out Rhea, another of Saturn's moons.
