Everyone is talking about our minor earthquake Tuesday afternoon Most of us didn't realize it was an earthquake at the time Friday is the deadline for registration for the Public Speaking Seminar at the Tryon Methodist Church to be given by Jim Rutledge. The final high school baseball game is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harmon Field between Tryon and Polk Central. Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m is the Ham or Chicken Supper al the Pea Ridge Community Building. Saturday at 11:30 a m the Tryon High school band will leave for a trip to Baltimore and Washington. They will march in the Preakness Parade in Baltimore and meet with Cong Bill Hendon on the capitol steps when they will be filmed by NBC news to be shown on NBC Magazine with David Brinkley at a later date. Monday is Tryon Day on WLOS-TV Continued On Back Page Minor Earthquake Felt Here A minor earthquake centered on the North Carolina-South Carolina line, accompanied with a loud noise some persons took to be a sonic boom or thunder, shook a wide area of Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina Tuesday at 5:22 p.m There were no reports of injuries or major damage from the tremor which the U. S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Service said measured 3.0 to 3.5 on the Richter scale. Many people in this area felt the tremor, but others were unaware that it took place. Special Meeting For Tryon School Board The Tryon School Board will hold a special meeting Monday at 7 30 p.m. with the Board of the Tryon PTA. The meeting will be held in the Superintendent's office at the high school. Hendon Aide Here May 18th Bob Orr, district administrative assistant to Rep Bill Hendon, is on a month-long tour of the 11th Congressional District. He will be in Polk County from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 18th at the Conference Room in the courthouse annex in Columbus Open House For New Group Home The Directors of the Association of Retarded Citizens invites all interested persons to an open house on Sunday, May 10 from three to five to inspect the new Group Home for mildly retarded people in the area. Neighbors and others will have an opportunity to meet the Board of Directors and the Group Home manager — teachers, Steve and Donna Christopher, and ask any questions about the program The residents will arrive the following week. Professor Dana Woodbridge is president of the Board and other directors are Joel Dobbins, Bunny Bates, Kathleen Cardwell, Harry Bates, Jack Bryan and Ann Foster. Honored Dr. C. W McCall, Jr. of Tryon was named a ’79’80 Distinguished President according to the April-May issue of the Carolina Kiwanian. Bishop Named Ass’t Vice Pres. Of Cannon Mills Cannon Mills Co., of Kannapolis, N. C. has elected Malcom B Bishop, Jr Assistant Vice President. He joined Cannon in 1950 as a trainer after his graduation from Clemson University. He served as assistant personnel director and as an administrative assistant to the superintendent of Plant 1. In 1960, he transferred to the cotton department where he is assistant director. Bishop, is an elder in the Kannapolis First Presbyterian Church. He lists his hobbies as fishing, golf and gardening. His wife, Leia, is art coordinator in the Kannapolis Elemetary Schools. The couple has four children. Ben, his wife, Susan and son, Matthew, live in Bradenton, Florida where he is the associate minister at Bradenton's First Prebyterian Church; Brian of Atlanta. Anne, a senior at UNC at Greensboro, and John, a senior in high school.
