Weather Tuesday: high 75, low
48. Wednesday was another
beautiful day.
The laurel seems to be outdoing
itself as all the bushes seem to be
loaded with flowers.
The world was shocked and
saddened with the announcement
Wednesday that Pope John Paul
II had been shot twice in the
midsection by a pistol before he
started his Papal Mass.
According to reports at noon
Wednesday the man had been
taken into custody, but his
nationality was not known. The
Pope's condition was reported as
serious.
A note from Arnold Hyde
reports that his place on Queen
Road, Candler is going to be put
on a Garden Club tour. At the
recent Rhododendron and Azalea
Show in Asheville his entries
made a clean sweep of the five
silver cup awards with a total of
25 blue ribbons, 11 red ribbons
and 3 third place winners. This is
the first time in 22 years that one
exhibitor won all the awards in
the five categories. Mr. Hyde was
a teacher and coach at Sunny
View High School when they won
the Polk County boys basketball
championship in 1940.

Antique Auto Show
Here Sunday
The Polk County Jaycees 7th
annual Antique and Classic Auto
Show will be held at Harmon
Field Sunday. Registration will
be held from 8 a m. to 1 p m. and
the judging of cars will be from 1
to 4 p.m. Trophies will be
awarded at 4 p.m.
Ace Rickenbacker
And WTYN Honored
Radio Station WTYN and Ace
Rickenbacker were honored
Tuesday at the Tryon Kiwanis
Club meeting at Pacolet River
Plantation. President Odell
Matthews presented Ace
Rickenbacker a Testimonial of
Appreciation from the Tryon
Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis
Internation for many years of
service to the community and the
upbuilding of Tryon and this
area.
Weavers Meet Sat.
The Western North Carolina
Fibers/Handweavers Guild will
meet Saturday at 10:30 a m at
Opportunity House in
Hendersonville. Doreen Schliske
of Columbus will give the
program, “18th Century
Clothing, Spun, Dyed, Woven and
Worn."
Mrs. Schliske, her husband and
daughter, take part in the Kings
Mountain march.

Wrecks
There were two wrecks in the
Tryon area Tuesday. At 2:39 p.m.
a minor accident took place at the
junction of Grady Ave. and
Markham Rd. Buford Barton of
Rt. 2, Landrum, driving a pick-up
truck owned by Early's Sheet
Metal was headed north on Grady
Ave. and turned into Markham
Road. James Slanaker, driving a
1963 Mercedes thought that Mr.
Barton was going to turn left and
was starting to pass him on the
right. No one was injured and
minor damage was done to the
automobiles. Tryon Police
Officer Leon Foy who
investigated the accident said
that Mr. Slanaker was charged
with improper passing.
At 1:30 p.m. Sharon M. Peake
and Beatrice C. Tempest, both of
Tryon met on a curve on Carolina
Drive near the intersection with
Hogback Mtn. Road. Mrs.
Tempest was driving a 1980
Volkswagen and Ms. Peake was
driving a 1978 Ford. Both were
taken to St. Luke's Hospital
where they were treated and
released. Highway Patrolman C.
T. Kennedy investigated the
accident.

Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Searcy of
Mill Spring are parents of a
daughter, Dina Lane, born May
10th, at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Heaton,
Jr. of Hendersonville are parents
of a daughter, Christal Michelle,
born May 10th at St. Luke's
Hospital.
Wins Scholarship
Denise Radford, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Richard E.
Radford of Rt. 2, Columbus has
earned a board of trustees
scholarship — the second highest
given through the Erskine
endowment at Erskine College,
Due West, S. C. The scholarship
was given by virtue of college
board scores, tests and campus
interviews.

Wreck
A one car accident took place
on the Lake Adger Road Tuesday
at 7 p.m. James Williams of
Tryon driving a 1974 Ford ran off
the road, went down an
embankment and overturned. He
and a passenger were shaken up
but not injured. Highway
Patrolman C. T. Kennedy
investigated the accident and
charged Mr Williams with
exceeding a safe speed.
