N C 28782 THURSDAY, MAY 21,1981 16 Panes Today Price 10c Per Copy Weather Tuesday: high 79, low 60. At 7 am. Wednesday there was .41 inch of rain. Our area has needed rain and we believe everyone has enjoyed the bad weather the past few days. Residents of Centralia. Pa voted 2 to 1 Tuesday in favor of digging up a 19-year-old underground mine fire, even if it requires destroying the community and rebuilding it elsewhere. The vote on the sale of beer and wine in the Town of Columbus will be held Saturday. The polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. The Post Office will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. There will be no window service or mail delivery on routes. Mail will be placed in the boxes. An ambush team of IRA bombers blew up a British armored vehicle with a half-ton of explosives Tuesday, killing five soldiers in the blast. The May 18th issue of People Magazine has an article on Faith Stewart-Gordon and her Russian Team Room in Manhattan. She is the daughter of the late Ernest Burwell and recently visited Mrs Continued On Back Page Thomson Selected For All-Star Game Marylou Thomson. Landrum High School senior has been selected to play in the North- South All-Star Basketball game at Lander College on August 1st. Miss Thomson was the leading scorer on the Landrum girls basketball team this past year. She made All Conference her junior and senior year and was captain this year. In addition to being an outstanding basketball performer Marylou is vice president of the student council and vice president of the senior class. She played No. 1 or No. 2 on the tennis team and with Luci Little was the State 1-A Doubles runner-up. She also ran the mile on the track team. She was named the DAR Good Citizen, a Wofford Scholar and on the Annual Staff. She is the daughter of Mr an Mrs. Billy Thomson. Ground Breaking For Sports Complex On Monday. May 25, at 5:30 p m., there will be a ground breaking ceremony for the Del Guercio Recreation Sport Complex in Landrum The complex is the result of a multi- agency effort to provide the Landrum area with new recreation facilities. It is a cooperative adventure between the City of Landrum, District One Continued On Back Page Engaged Miss Kelly Brown Mrs. J R. Helms of Landrum, S. C. and James E. Brown of Greenville. S. C. have announced the engagement of their daughter, Kelly Melinda, to Phillip E. Pierce of Lynn, N. C. Mr. Pierce is the son of Mrs. Boyd E. Pritchard of Lynn and Leon Pierce of Taylors. S. C. The bride-elect attends Landrum High School. The bridegroom elect graduated from Tryon High School and is employed by Daniel Construction Company in Selma, Alabama. The wedding has been set for July 4th. Tuesday School Graduation The Tuesday School graduation will be held May 28th at 12 noon at Harmon Field. Big Chase The Town of Landrum had lots of excitement Tuesday afternoon when three police cars were in pursuit of another vehicle. The chase started in Tryon when Tryon Police Officer Billy Stepp tried to stop a car driven by John Calvin Bailey of Rt. 1, Landrum on Screvin Road. The car didn't stop and headed down River Road. The Tryon Police called for assistance from the Sheriff's Dept, and Sheriff Boyce Carswell tried to head the car off near Comoco Farm, but arrived seconds late. He joined in the chase in the event of an accident or if help were needed. The Landrum Police had been notified and they tried to stop the car near the state line. Apparently Bailey tried to make the turn off Rutherford Road to Shamrock and hit the curb in front of the Landrum Laundromat. Bailey was taken from his car and handcuffed. Spartanburg County had a warrant for his arrest for Criminal Sexual Assault Tryon Police have a warrant for him for failing to stop for blue light and siren Landrum Police took out a warrant for him for violation of the S.C. gun law (had a gun on the front seat of the car). He was taken to the Spartanburg County Jail. The Music Makers of Tryon are playing Friday night at Le Baron Steak House and Saturday night at the Hawaii Village in Spartanburg.
