V?^" Dai 'y Bulletin. Wed., May. 27 Showstoppers” Christine and Stephen Fitch If there is one area in which American theater has unquestionably excelled, it is in musical drama, with its enthusiastic portrayal of the human experience, tin May 28-30 at 8 p m. and on May 31 at 3 p.m. at the Tryon (NCI Fine Arts Center, local theater goers will be treated to a high caliber retrospective of some of the very best music produced since 1927 — the year "Show Boat" broke new ground in musical theater by moving beyond leggy chorus lines to integrate: music with a sound story line and human characterization In “An Evening of Broadway Showstoppers," professional actors Christine and Stephen Fitch of Landrum. SC. have selected and will star in a production of two dozen or so of their favorite musical numbers, blended together with theater history, personal anecdote, acting, dance, and just a touch of humor. This original production will celebrate the American composers and lyricists who thrived in the musical's new form, producing such hits as Alan Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s "Almost Like Being In Love" from the charming 1947 fantasy "Brigadoon " In 1943, the world became aware of an unbeatable duo compuser Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, when "Oklahoma" opened on Broadway. The two did it again land again and again) in 1949 when "South Pacific" opened with its "There is Nothing Like a Dame”, breaking all kinds of records and winning a Pulitzer prize Christine Fitch is right at home singing a medley from the 1956 smash hit "My Fair Lady”, for it ,1981 was she who played poor Eliza Doolittle in the London production of Lerner and Loewe’s theatrical masterpiece. And moving from waif-like to pretty, "Showstoppers" audience will hear Leonard Bernstein’s "I Feel Pretty” from the 1957 hit "West Side Story ", a show which departed from the usual charm of American musicals, but which lacked none of its zest and extravagance. "If I Were A Rich Man" from "Fidler On The Roof". "Standing On The Corner" from "Most Happy Fella." and "I Don't Know How To Love Him " from "Jesus Christ Super Star" are just a sampling of the numbers that will be sung, danced, and recollected by the Fitches in "An Evening of Broadway Showstoppers The show's cast is rounded out by the deft acting and singing abilities of Dean Campbell of Gowensville. S. C., and pianist Billy Jones of Greer. S. C The production, for which the performers are donating their talents, will benefit the Tryon Fine Arts Center and Landrum Friends of the Arts Reserved tickets are $4 and may be obtained by phoning or stopping by the Arts Center box office 1704 859-5179) between the hours of 10 am — 12 pm and 1-4 pm. Monday through Friday. Reporter Health Watch By N. C Medical Society It happens every year, doesn't it? It's that first warm weekend, either in the backyard or at the beach, and you laid out in the sun too long. It is not readily apparent at the time, but sooner or later the redness comes out and the pain begins. You have been sunburned. Make no mistake about it. a sunburn is a real burn In severe cases, when you've really been blistered, it is exactly like a first degree burn that you might receive from a fire. If the discomfort is too great you might consult your physician for treatment. Drugs called steroids used internally or on the skin's surface can effectively reduce pain. In most cases, time is what is most needed You can reduce your discomfort by using cool water compresses on the skin and taking aspirin to relieve the pain. However, do not use any preparations which contain a drug called benzocaine. All allergic reaction to this drug can complicate the original burn, causing the skin to get redder and the burn to get worse. What can you do to prevent sunburn? The best advice is to use a bit of common sense. Start slowly and build up your exposure to the sun and you will have less of a chance of getting burned. If you are planning on being out in the sun for a length of time, there are a number of sunscreens available that will filter out much of the sun s burning rays. The most effective of these contain either one or both of the ingredients PABA iparaamino benzoic acid) or bensylphenones ■ Io see WORKING TOGETHER MEANS WINNING TOGETHER!
