Ron Hicks, Landrum High
School boys basketball coach, has
taken the job as head basketball
coach at Easley High School. The
29 year old Hicks, in his fifth year
at Landrum led the Cardinals to a
21-7 record and the Conference 1-

Teacher Of The Year
Mrs. Melba Wheeler
Each year the students of
Chapman High School, in Inman,
South Carolina, select one faculty
member to honor as "Teacher of
the Year " The award this year
was presented to Mrs. Melba
Wheeler in ceremonies conducted
Wednesday, May 20. Mrs.
Wheeler received a double honor
since she has held this prestigious
award twice during her nine
years of teaching at Chapman.
She received her Bachelor of
Science and Masters Degrees
from Appalachian State
University and is presently
teaching English and journalism.
She and her husband Johnny
Wheeler reside at Route 1,
Columbus
Her other duties include annual
advisor, chairman of the
curriculm committee, chairman
of the Chapman Advisory
Council, and chairman of the
senior class.

At Rotary Friday
The Tryon Rotary Club will
meet Friday at 12:30 p.m at the
Pacolet River Plantation.
Bernard and Rita Drummond
will speak on “How South Africa
Got To Where It Is Today." Their
talk will review the history of
South Africa, its establishment as
an independent republic and the
current political trends there.
While they were born in Great
Britain, the Drummonds lived in
Johannesburg from 1948 to 1951.
They have twice revisited it —
the last time in 1980.
