JUNE 19,1981 IG Pages Today Price 10c Per Copy Weather Wednesday: high 92, low 74, rain .05. Thursday morning was cloudy and cool. By a 5-3 vote the U. S. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that government safety regulators do not have to satisfy a cost benefit test before imposing standards limiting worker exposure to toxic materials. The court did so in upholding a stringent new federal standard for worker exposure to cottondust. The decision was based on an interpretation of the 1970 law that created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Friday at 8 p.m. is the Donkey Softball game at the Green Creek Ball Field. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is “Celebrate Saluda” Day and the Saluda artists and craftsmen will have their items on display. Those who have never been inside a carpet mill will have an opportunity to do so Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m at the Landrum Mills Open House. The canvas, plastic and cord webbing on outdoor furniture can be kept clean with warm detergent or soap suds and brisk scrubbing. Always rinse well, and wipe off excess water. Polk County Election Board The Polk County Election Board has elected Ray Watson of Rt. 4, Rutherfordton as chairman to succeed Paul Gilbert; Annie Bell Gilbert of Rt 1. Rutherfordton is secretary. Both Watson and Gilbert are Democrats. E. Hall Arledge of Star Route, Saluda is the Republican member of the board. The members of the Polk County Election Board were appointed by the State Board of Elections upon recommenation of the local Executive Committee. Crime Watch At Mill Spring Mill Spring Community Crime Watch will meet at Mill Spring School Tuesday night, June 23rd, 7:30 p.m. C. J. Conner of Rutherfordton is expected to deliver the last order of signs and show another film on crime prevention. The entire community is invited. Republican Convention The 11th Congregational District Republican Convention will be held Sat., June 27 at Hayesville High School auditorium, Hayesville beginning at 3 p.m. U. S. Rep. Bill Hendon of Asheville will be the principal speaker. The delegates will elect district officers and delegates to the N. C. GOP Convention to be held in Wilmington July 24 and 25. Win State Awards At the recent state convention of the Business and Professional Women at Wilmington, Mrs. Myrtle Littlefield was awarded the silver trophy for bring ing new members and Mrs. Emily Ross Scoggins won the Scrapbook award. Linda R. Marsten, past president of the local organization was named a District Director for the Mountain Area. Those attending the convention were Linda Marsten, Lynn Scoggins, Sarah Edwards, Linda Young, Wanda Starling and Myrtle Littlefield. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lindsay of Tryon are parents of a son, Blake Karl, born June 18th at 4:02 a m. at the Rutherford County Hospital. He weighed 8 lbs 24 oz and was 224” long. He has a brother, Zane, age 4. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. George B Lindsay of Burlington and the maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Karl Voss of Kernersville. Rinse in warm water and polish dry Pectin is the ingredient that makes the jams “jam" and the jellies “jell.” Choir To Celebrate Sth Anniversary “I Found Jesus and I’m Glad” is the theme for the celebration of the 8th Anniversary of the Garrison Chapel Young Adult Choir. The Anniversary program will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Garrison Chapel Baptist Church on Markham Road. The 20 voice choir, now in its 8th year under the direction of Angela Jones of Roebuck, S. C., continues to offer a wide range of spiritual and gospel music. Not only does the choir participate in services at Garrison Chapel, but they continue to receive numerous invitations to appear on programs at churches throughout the surrounding areas. 1981 also marks the 23nd year that Mrs. Katherine F. Canady has served as advisor to the choir. Several area choirs, including the Evangelistic Choir and the Male Chorus of Garrison Chapel, the Mt. Zion and the Mt. Sinai Baptist churches of Spartanburg, will participate in the anniversary service. The public is invited. Tennis At Red Fox The Polk County Animal Protection Society Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament will be in progress this weekend at Red Fox Country Club. The tournament will be held all day Saturday and at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Some excellent tennis is promised.
