A front came through late Monday night and early Tuesday morning with some high wind, lightning and a few drops of rain. It did cool things off. Thousands of relieved travel ers flew America's skies Monday after a contract dispute was settled with air traffic controllers just two hours before a threatened strike. Former President Richard M. Mill Spring are parents of a son, Jason Erik, born June 18th at Spartanburg General Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 ounces. The maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bea Bridgeman of Rt. 1, Columbus and the paternal grandmother is Mrs. Douglas Walker of Rt. 2, Mill Spring. The maternal great- grandmother is Mrs. Pearl Foster of Rt. I. Columbus. Families Evacuated Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell was patroling the Lake Adger Road Tuesday at 1 a.m. to check on storm damage when he noticed a fire burning in the pump house of Transcontinental Pipe Line. He notified Larry Cochran of the Tryon Police Department who in turn notified the Columbus Fire Department and the Transcontinental officials. The Sheriff’s Department was advised by the gas company officials to evacuate about 14 mile from the fire and Sheriff Carswell said that involved about 15 families. The families were able to stay at Polk Central High School until conditions were pronounced safe. Officials from the gas line arrived in about 45 minutes and turned off the gas and sprayed the building with dry chemicals. The fire was believed to have been started by lightning. Lightning Hits Moffitt Chimney The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Moffitt on Godshaw Hill Monday night about 11:45 p.m. Fire Chief Clarence Scoggins said that lightning hit the chimney, knocking off some bricks, moving into the base of the chimney. Chief Scoggins said that it smelled like someone had been shooting off fire crackers in the house from the lightning, but that no other damage was done. Car Stolen A '80 Honda Civic (red) was stolen from Buffy’s Restaurant on Hwy. 176 Saturday about 6:30 p.m. The car was owned by Darlene A. Ravan of Landrum, but had been driven to Buffy’s by her brother Michael Ravan, who had borrowed the car when his own car wouldn't start. Mr. Ravan was only going to be in Buffy's for a minute and left his keys in the car. When he came back out, the car was gone. Storyhour Guest Guest storyteller this Thursday, June 25, at the Landrum Library will be Mrs. Phyllis Burns, Director of the Chesnee Day Care Center. All children three years and up are invited to attend. Mrs. Debbie Camp has been rescheduled and will be the guest storyteller on July 2. Storyhour is held each Thursday from 4:30 — 5:00 McGuinns Moving To Simpsonville Dr. and Mrs. Terry R. McGuinn and children, Sean Kevin and Erin Kate, are moving to Simpsonville, S. C. Dr. McGuinn, a native of Tryon, began his solo Family Practice here last July. He will be working with Dr. William J. Bannen, Jr. and Dr. James F. Richardson of the Golden Strip Medical Associates, P.A. in Simpsonville effective July 1st. Dr. Sherill Braswell, who was practicing medicine in Tryon is in private practice in Winston- Salem. Dr. Mark Hicklin, who was practicing medicine in Tryon is in a group practice in Rutherfordton. Dr. Steve Parks, who was with the Landrum Medical Center, is going to Emergency Room Medicine in Tampa, Fla. No Power A large tree went down across a pole near Vic Vollmer’s house in the Valley early Tuesday morning and the area was without electricity until about 8 a.m. Tuesday. There were several other smaller areas that lost their electricity due to the trees going across lines
