In Green Creek they’re weaving their own handmade beads into yarn and grass wall hangings, doing batiks of boats, and made a book of farm animals with guest artist Craig Pleasants, proprietor of the Upstaris Gallery. Saluda campers have used crayons to do splashes and resists (art forms known well to the younger generation), made stain glass windows with tissue paper, and will work with local potter Darlelta Dukes. At Stearns, they're into play dough faces and Jello painting (another esoteric art form, no doubt), have made their own sweet-smelling sachets, and shaped pine cones into people with Community Schools' roving craftsperson Jill Meares, who also leaches an evening folkcraft class on the porch of Stearns gym for junior high students. The craftsmakers at Sunny view have been busy making yarn dolls, fish mobiles, and rock and walnut paperweights — to name just a few of their projects. And Mill Spring campers have reached into the past and the future, gluing yarn onto their own comtemporary string art pictures and visiting the outdoor workshop of Winfield Blackwell to watch him handchisel a poplar dough tray with the special old tools he has used since his own youth. Samples of this wide variety of arts and crafts will be displayed for all to see at an art exhibit in Columbus on the Fabulous Fourth of July, along the fence in front of Stearns School The Day Camp arts program is supported in part by a generous $500 grant from the Polk County Community Arts Council, which itself is a part of the Grass Roots Arts Program of the state’s North Carolina Arts Council. The camps are further enriched by numerous local artists who are visiting the schools to share their talents with the next generation of creative kids. If you are interested in information on summer Day Camp programs, call the Community Schools office. 894- 3905. — Reporter ANDREWS Spring Clearance Sale One Week SPECIAL PRICED TO PLEASE.
