Refusing to reverse a
longstanding military tradition,
the U. S. Supreme Court affirmed
Thursday that women are
exempt from registration and the
draft. And it implicitly approved,
as well, the exclusion of female
enlistees from combat. By a 6-3
vote, the justices ruled that
Military Selective Service Act is
constitutional. A lower federal
court had ruled that the 1949 law
fosters unconstitutional sex
discrimination against men.

Green did not appear to have
broken any laws and he will not
be charged with any criminal
offenses.

Auditions Tuesday For
TLT’S Belle of Amherst
Auditions will be held
tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in the
Tryon Fine Arts Center for
William Luce's "The Belle of
Amherst,” the Tryon Little
Theater’s October season opener
under the direction of Dean
Campbell.
A one-person play, "Belle” is
based on the life of poet Emily
Dickinson, who is 53 years old at
the time of the play. But as
playwright Luce notes, Emily's
age is not too relevant since she
appears younger than she is.
Tryon has a special tie with
"The Belle of Amherst." One of
the Dickinson sources cited by
Mr. Luce with gratitude in the
printed play is "The Lyman
Letters" by Richard B. Sewall.
Mr. Sewall has visited Tryon
often, and his brother Grenville
resides here.
Any actress wishing to read for
the role of Emily who cannot
attend tomorrow’s audition is
asked to call the Fine Arts Center
office to arrange an alternate
audition date: 859-5248.
"The Belle of Amherst" will
play October 1,2, and 3.
