The Southern Clog Dance
Championships will be held at
Qualla Civic Center at Cherokee
Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The finals will be 10 a.m. and 2
p.m. Sunday.
Lynn Marie Williford, Miss
Wilmington, was crowned Miss
North Carolina Saturday night in
Raleigh. A professional dancer,
she is a 5’7”, 108 lb. blonde.
Veteran civil rights activist,
Jesse L. Jackson led about 1,000
people Sunday on a march in
Edgefield, S. C. which he hoped
would send a "clear message
around the nation" that blacks
will not give up their right to vote.
Tonight at 8 p.m. is the audition
of the Tryon Little Theater's
“The Belle od Amhurst” at the
Fine Arts Center.

Teenager Killed
In Auto Wreck
Todd Stephen Reid, 16, of
Green Creek was killed Saturday
morning at 7:15 when he was
thrown from his vehicle. He was
driving North on Hwy. 9 between
Green Creek and Mill Spring
when he lost control of his
vehicle. The car ran off the road
and overturned. He died of
multiple head and chest injuries
according to reports. There
were no other passengers or
vehicles involved.

son, John Matthew, born June
23rd at St. Luxe s Hospital
The paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Odel of Rt. 1,
Mill Spring and the paternal
great-grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. T. B. Odel of Rt. 1, MiD
Spring.
The maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ormand
of Columbus and the great
grandmothers are Mrs. J. F.
Ormand of Columbus and Mrs.
John Wright of Weaverville.

daughter, Erica Leigh, born June
24th at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mrs. Faye Lynch
Friday was the last day in the
Postal Service for Mrs. Faye
Lynch. Mrs. Lynch retired after
36 years, 11 months and 10 days
and received a certificate of
Service Award from Mill Spring
Postmaster John Lynch. Mrs
Lynch said she had met a lot of
good people and enjoyed her
work. She served 8 years as a
borrowed clerk at the Tryon Post
Office and seven months as
borrowed clerk at the
Hendersonville Post Office. The
rest of her postal service was at
the Mill Spring Post Office.
Mrs. Lynch, whose husband,
The Rev. George W. Lynch, is
pastor of the Big Level Baptist
Church, is looking forward to
doing some knitting, crocheting
and other things that she hasn't
had time to do.

employees and their spouses
treated Mr. and Mrs. Lynch to a
steak supper Friday night

All-Stars Named
The Polk County Little League
All-Stars were announced
following the final game
Saturday afternoon at Harmon
Field. The team will be managed
by Wayne Duncan, manager of
the pennant winning Cardinals
and he will be assisted by Larry
Phillips
The team is as follows:
Cardinals: Chris Hardin, Joe
Burnette, Robert Justice and
Paul Easlic.
Pirates: Mark Shehan. Alfred
Twitty
Indians: Donald Hill.

Miss Amy Palmer, daughter of
Dr and Mrs Robert Palmer and

Tryon, left today for an American
Institute of Foreign Study (AIFS)
tour of England, Holland,
Belguim, France and Spain. They
will spend two weeks in Paris and
approximately two weeks in St
Jean de Luz, France studying the
French language and customs.
They will return August 3rd
