Weather Thursday: high 82,

The N. C. Senate Finance
Committee Thursday voted to
send all bills that would increase
local sales taxes to a
subcommittee for further study,
effectively putting off the issue
for at least one year. The
committee also voted to study,
rather than approve, proposed
increases in alcohol taxes that
would have added a penny to the
cost of a can of beer, and hiked
liquor taxes one-third.
The U. S. Supreme Court ruled
Thursday that former President
Jimmy Carter had the power to
reach the agreement with Iran
that freed 52 American hostages
in January
The U. S. Justice Department
and the University of North
Carolina formally signed an
agreement Thursday designed to
bring more white students to the
UNC system's five black
campuses and to end an 11-year
desegregation dispute.
Southern Bell notified the N. C.
State Utilities Commission
Thursday that it intends to file for
a general rate increase in

Injured In Accident
Patricia Moe, lO'i year old
daughter of Mrs. Patricia Moe of
711 S. Randolph St., Landrum
was seriously injured
Wednesday, June 24th and is a
patient in room 249, St. Luke's
Hospital. Patricia was riding
her bike in Landrum at about 7:30
in the evening when she came to
an intersection and collided with
an automobile driven by Thomas
P. Johnson of Landrum Patricia
received several broken bones
and will be laid up for a number
of weeks.
She moved to Landrum from
Saluda about a month ago and
would love to hear from her
friends. She will be entering the
6th grade at 0. P. Earle this fall.

Crepe Myrtles
One of the prettiest flowering
trees around is the crepe myrtle.
It blooms during the hottest part
of summer and comes in many
different shades. The
watermelon red crepe myrtles
planted along the Tryon Stairs
are beginning to bloom now and
have made Trade Street more
attractive than ever.
Sheriff’s Report
During the month of June the
Polk County Sheriff’s
Department escorted five
funerals and served the following
warrants: 1 assault on female, 5
damage to personal property, 2
possession of drugs, 3
manufacturing marijuana, 1
larceny of auto, 4 larceny by
breaking and entering, 1
worthless check, 1 DUI, 2
communicating threats, 1
trespassing, 1 livestock running
at large, 1 simple assault and
battery, 3 open containers of
alcoholic beverage, 3
abandoment and non-support.
There was 1 trip to Broughton
Hospital, 1 order to show cause, 1
special proceedings summons, 2
execution on property, 1 order of
forfieture on bond, 169

magistrate summons, 1 notice of
hearing.
