Mayor Ted Owens of Columbus has asked that all Columbus water users refrain from watering their garden, lawn or washing cars. Mayor Owens said that the extremely hot and dry weather has cut the Columbus water supply in half. He urged that everyone cooperate in the effort to conserve water. North Carolina joined eight other Southern states Tuesday in a quarantine of California fruit and vegetables to avoid possible crop infestation by Mediterranean fruit flies. The quarantine won’t necessarily stop the produce from entering the state, but it will subject the produce to scrutiny and possible rejection. Firecracker Tournament The Sth annual Tri-County Softball League Firecracker Tournament was held July 10, 11 and 12 at Harmon Field. There were a total of 54 games played. The Men’s Division was won by Budweiser of Spartanburg and the Women’s Title was taken by The Diamonds of Gaffney, S. C. Following Budweiser in the Men’s Tournament were: 2nd. Wright Metal of Greenville, S. C.; 3rd. Lancaster-Warlick of Forest City. The leading home run hitter was Steve Alexander of Wright Metal with 3. Runner-up to The Diamonds in the Women's Tournament were Jackson Latures of Bryson City. The third spot was won by the Rockettes of Tryon. Green Creek Is Eliminated Green Creek was eliminated from the Area I Double Elimination Tournament Tuesday when they dropped a 14- 4 decision to Harris-Shiloh. The Green Creek field became a hitter's paradise as Harris-Shiloh hit five home runs.
