The Postal Service reached a
tentative contract settlement
with its two largest unions late
Tuesday, ending a nation wide
strike threat. Over the three
years of the contract the average
postal worker will receive an
extra $900 in wages and will be
eligible for $1,200 in bonuses. The
contract also includes unlimited
cost of living adjustments and
health benefit premiums. The
Post Service promptly aired
another pitch for a 2-cent rate
increase for first-class mail.
Leaders of the major industrial
democracies ended their
economic summit Tuesday in
Ottawa, Canada.
A national postage stamp
featuring the Biltmore House is
scheduled to be issued on Aug.
28th. It will be one of four stamps
issued in an architectural series.
The other stamps in the series
depict the Palace of Arts in San
Francisco; the New York
University Library and the Bank,
Owatonna, Minn.

Harmon Field will be closed to

The registration for the Polk
County Jaycee-Kiwanis Open
Tennis Tournament will continue
until Monday. The forms are

Senior League Results
Tuesday evening at Forest
City, the Rutherfordton Senior
League defeated Green Creek 24
too.
The Polk County-Forest City
game was called at the 11 p..
curfew with Polk County leading
9 to 2 at the top of the Sth. The
game was to have been continued
at that point Wednesday evening.
Thad Davis continued his fine
hitting for Polk County with 2
hits, one of which was a home
run. This was his third home run
in two games.

have bought the Charles Covil
house on Hooker St. in Landrum.
Dr. Gulley is seeing patients at
the Landrum Clinic. Dr. Gulley
and his wife, Anne, have one
daughter, Sarah, who is 19
months old. Penny Kessler and
Lydia Clontz of Gaut-Pruette
Associates handled this
transaction.
Miss Pam Scoggins and Tim
Scoggins, have returned to Tryon
from a Id-day trip to Hawaii.
While there they visited Sgt.
Steve Powell of the US Marines
who took them sightseeing. Sgt.
Powell is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Powell of Tryon and Tim
and Pam are the son and
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll

Singing Saturday
There will be a Singing on
Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Blue
Ridge Free Will Baptist Church.

Valley Crusaders and The
Carolina Quartet. The Rev.

Quakers Meet
The Religious Society of
Friends (Quakers) will meet for
worship Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph

Branch Library Storyhour today
