The food poisoning Saturday night of more than 300 people at ■the Ridgecrest Baptist Conference Center near Black Mountain was described Sunday as the worst medical emergency in Buncombe County history. An extimated 64 victims were admitted for overnight treatment in area hospitals. Wednesday morning Prince Charles will marry Lady Diana Spencer at St Paul's Cathedral. Water is a resource that most North Carolinians take for granted, but conservationists and scientists in the state say that between now and the year 2000 it will become a problem issue in North Carolina. The Polk County Commissioners (Opal Sauve and Ralph Arledge) have allocated 52400 to send four people to New York to learn to set up voting machines. Hub Arledge (Democrat) and Arthur Covil, (Republican) had been doing this the past 13 years. Ray Watson, Continued On Back Page David Vining Wins 18 And Under Title David Vining won the 18 and under singles tennis title Sunday afternoon at Harmon Field by defeating Dale Owens 6-0, 6-1. This is the 4th consecutive year that David has won the Polk County Jaycee 18 and under tennis title. This year the Tryon Kiwanis Club joined the Polk County Jaycees in sponsoring the event. In the boys doubles, Scott Wray and David Vining defeated Ricky Searcy and Dale Owens 6-3, 7-5 and in the Mixed Doubles, Sherrie Miller and Eddie Woodhouse downed Jessica Lonnes and Scott Wray 7-5,6-3. Injured In Freak Accident An elderly couple was injured in a freak accident Monday morning in front of the Tryon Post Office. Elizabeth Nevins Smith of Delray Beach, Fla was driving and her husband, Roland Smith, was on the passenger side of the car. Mrs. Smith pulled into a parking space in front of the post office heading the wrong way. As she got out the car began to roll down the street. She fell and the car stopped when it rolled against her leg. Mr. Smith was injured as he tried to get out of the car. The Polk County Ambulance took them to St. Luke’s Hospital where they were treated for tlieir injuries. Commissioners Vote To Send People To New York (If Legal) The County Commissioners met with the Board of Elections Friday, 24 July 1981, to discuss the possibility of sending persons to the school in Jamestown, N. Y. to learn how to prepare the voting machines. All members of both board were present except Commissioner Butler who had a previous commitment. Commission Sauve outlined the action taken beginning on 13 May when plans were first discussed with Donna Butler. Commissioner Sauve moved that the budget be amended to allot 52400 to send 2 Democrats and 2 Republicans to the school. After considerable discussion, the motion was seconded and passed. Among the discussions were the following points made by the members of the Election Board: Chairman Roy Watson felt that the present two persons are good and there are schools in N. C. Why take all that money to send anyone to N. Y. Annie Bell Gilbert said that it may not be advisable to spend the money at this time. Watson pointed out there is no urgency. Watson also said he does not know where the schools in N. C. are but he could find out. Gilbert said she thinks it would be feasible to get help from a nearby county if an emergency came up. Lee Atkins, spokesman for the Continued On Back Page Jackson & Jackson Acquires Textile Firm Jackson & Jackson, Inc., Tryon, N. C., a 68 year-old textile firm which manufactures Cloth of Gold fabrics, has announced the acquisition of Foust Textile sales operation of Kings Mountain, N. C. This will became effective August 1, 1981, with headquarters in Tryon. The managerial staff of the new operation of Jackson & Jackson, Inc., is as follows: Nelson Jackson, II, President; J. C. Wilson, Jr., Vice President Manufacturing and Processing; Kenneth Forrester, Vice President Administration; John 0. Plonk, Vice President Sales. The coming together of these two firms in the name of Jackson & Jackson, Inc., is expected to be of interest both locally and nationally. Landrum Man Found Dead Behind Wheel An elderly Landrum man was found dead behind the steering wheel of his automobile Sunday night, apparently the victim of a heart attack. Deputy Coroner Jerald Craig identified the dead man as William H. Nodine, 80 of 515 N. Howard St., Landrum. Craig said the man was driving his automobile on Hwy. 9 near Soiling Springs when he apparently had a cardiac arrest. His automobile plowed through a pasture and came to stop about 300 feet from the pavement. — Spartanburg Herald
