Preliminary tests indicate that
ham containing staphylococcus
bacteria caused food poisoning
that sent 308 people attending a
Baptist Convention at Ridgecrest
to area hospitals Sunday night.
President Reagan went on TV
Monday night to appeal for his
tax cut proposal. The Democrats
say that they have a better one.
State Senator James McClure
Clarke has announced that he is
seeking the Democratic
nomination for Congress from the
11th District. The seat is now held
by Republican Representative
Bill Hendon.
The unemployment rate in
North Carolina increased in June
to 6.3 percent, up 0.5 of a
percentage point for the May rate
of 5.8 percent.
The State Senior League
baseball tournament is in
progress at Harmon Field. These
14 and 15 year old boys play good
baseball.
The Heart Mixed Doubles

Alexandria Watson
Appointed To
College Faculty
Miss Alexandria H. Watson,
formerly of Columbus, N. C. has
accepted an appointment to the
faculty of the College of Nursing
at James Madison University in
Harrisonburg, Virginia. James
Madison was established in 1908
and is part of the Virginia
University system. The College
of Nursing was begun in 1978 with
the Bachelor of Science Nursing
degree.
Miss Watson will teach
Medical-Surgical nursing at the
senior level. She is a 1975
graduate of Polk Centra) High
School, a 1979 graudate of
Western Carolina University and
in May 1981 she received from the
University of North Carolina at
Greensboro, a Master of Science
in Nursing Education, with an
emphasis on cardiovascular
disease. She has held positions in
the nursing profession in
Asheville, Wilmington, and
Greensboro, N. C.
Miss Watson has been selected
to represent UNC-Greensboro at
the Seventh Annual Graduate
Nursing Research Symposium in
Birmingham, Alabama, in July.
She will present her Master's
thesis which concerns the current
nursing status of sexual
counseling practices for cardiac
patients. Other universities being
represented at the Symposium
include Emory, Louisiana State,
and the Universities of Alabama
and Florida.

County Board of Commissioners

room in the courthouse annex.

Here From Denmark
Ms. Susan Hoffmann, Ms. Helle
Hansen and Ms. Charlotte Ryge
of Roskilde, Denmark are
visiting Ms. Martha Brady in
Tryon this week. They attended
the same school as Ms. Brady
last year in Denmark while she
was an AFS student there.
They will be in America for
about two months. They have
already visited in New York and
Vermont. From Tryon they will
go to Miami, Fla. then to
Houston, Texas and then to San
Francisco, California.

Belue, will be the guest
storyteller at the regular
Storyhour at Landrum Branch
Library. The filmstrip to be used
is "Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss
and Mrs. Belue will use the book
"The Plant Sitter."
Senior League
State Tournament
The North Carolina Senior
League State Tournament is
being held at Harmon Field.
Teams participating are
Winston-Salem, Monroe, Hudson,
Roanoke Rapids, Rutherfordton,
Sylva and West Fayetteville.
There were some excellent
baseball games played Monday
in the double elimination tourna
ment.

Dove Season
Opens Sept. 5
The opening day of the dove
season in North Carolina is
September sth. This year the
dove season will be split, running
from Sept. 5 through Oct. 10 and
from Dec. 14 through Jan. 15.
During the first half of the
season, hunting will be allowed
from 12 noon until sunset and in
the second half of the season
hunting will be allowed from one-
half hour before sunrise until
sunset.
New Look For
Water Bills
Next week there will be a new
look for the Town of Tryon water
bills. These will be the first bills
that have been done by computer.
