Long Meeting For School Board The Polk County School Board met Monday night in the Agriculture Conference Room in the Court House annex. The Board went into executive session to discuss personnel and upon coming into open session did the following: hired Evan Atwood as special education teacher, Nancy Wilson as elementary teacher, Patricia Jordan as 44 vocational handicapped and W time remediation teacher, Mary Ann Hamilton as exceptional children teacher and Terry Cash in the Alternative School program A cash settlement of $12,500 with Carthon Hinson was approved by the Board and Mr Hinson. Two amendments were made to the Calendar — Veteran's Day holiday was moved from Nov. 9th to Nov. 11th as required by State Law and Tuesday, May 4th is Primary Day and since some schools are used as polling places it was made a student holiday and a teacher workday. The budget was examined and further cuts in expenses were shown to the Board, but according to Supt. Ron Singletary the school system was still $30,428 short of a balanced budget to run the schools in current expense. He suggested that they meet with the County Manager and Chairman of the County Commissioners to share their problems and difficulties. The Board authorized the Finance Officer Superintendent and Board Chairman, along with any board member who wants to attend the meet and work out their difficulties. Joe Testor brought the Board up to date on the Live Project, as to cost and the projected plans. The Board moved that 3 bids be required on all contract jobs. The Board discussed the tuition View residents were present to discuss the proposed open air gym. Supt. Singletary said that Dr. Darrell Spencer recommended the Board employ an architect to draw the plans and to supervise the construction and that more information was needed. The Sunny View patrons were unhappy with the lack of progress the Board had made with the project and felt as if the Board were fighting it. The Board met with the group following the meeting and will meet with the Ruritan President or his representatives to work out what has to be done to get the building underway. Mrs. Lib Correll gave a report on the Testing and reported that the Polk County students equalled or were superior to the national average in reading, language and math The only exceptions were the 6th grade in reading and the 9th grade in math Supt Singletary reported that a School Bus driver for the Mill Spring school had been approved.
