You Only Live Once As mentioned in previous aritcles about the Great Books Discussion Groups, these groups present an opportunity to the participants for lively discussions every two weeks. In addition members have a chance to read selected excerpts from influential writings that have been read and studied for centuries-writings that not only created “civilized man”, but continue civilization itself. It has been said that upon completing life on earth the measure of living is how many of the events of the chronological period were experiences. There is always that mountain, climbed by a few, the challenge of which was simply imply “that it was there." There are few among contemporaries who experience space travel. While the average educated person is unable to tally these exotic challenges among the accomplishments of his life, there are significant experiences that are easy to achieve with a little bit of effort. Among the significant experiences of easy access are books that have been influential enough to be read with Through the Great Books Discussion Groups spsonsored by the Lanier Library the members of the Community have a chance to add the Great Books to their collection of experiences without reading musty volumes along and cloistered like many scholars of history. Today’s explorer of the Great Books has selected passages in easy to read paper back and shares his reactions with his group. Reactions by participants in Groups vary. A reaction to Tolstoy’s "The Death of Ivan Ilych" was. “It was beautifully written, a joy to read, and Ivan Ilych’s problems were those of many a thinking person in today’s suburbia " Philosophers consistently amazed one group. (Each group meets only a couple of philosophers. I The reaction was "They state eternal ideas for the first time. Those ideas become a part of civilization and influence following generations. But their style is one of starting with a simple and eternal idea which they repeat over and over with ever increasing confusion " The consensus was that the philosophers constituted a challenge worth attacking in spite of their style-particularly in excerpts rather than in full volume. To add the experience of the Great Books (o your assortment of experiences, simply go to the circulation desk at the Lanier Library where all the information is available and sign up for a group before September first. — Reporter 40 Years Ago Members of the Tryon Presbyterian Church give a farewell party in honor of Major and Mrs W.
