Contributions to help the Tryon
Firemen with their bags of fruit
and candy to give to the children
at the Christmas Parade have
been received from Mrs Edna G.
Falconer and Mr and Mrs.
Stowell C. Wasson
Each year the Tryon Chamber
of Commerce with the help of the
Tryon Boy Scouts, Tryon Rotary
Club and the Town of Tryon
employees, puts up Christmas
trees and lights them. Each year
a number of strings have to be
repaired and replaced and the
electricity paid for People in the
community who like the idea of
putting up the Christmas trees to
wish everyone a Merry
Christmas support the program
with contributions. These
contributions may be left at the
Tryon Chamber of Commerce
office ar at the Bulletin Office. A
contribution from Mr. and Mrs.
Stowell C. Wasson has already
been received. The trees go up
the first part of December. Mrs.
P. C. Cochran has donated the
trees over the years.

Town Of Tryon
Acquires Lake Lanier
The Board of Commissioners of
the Town of Tryon have acquired
Lake Lanier from the Southern
Mercerizing Company. The
Town's acquisition of Lake
Lanier culminates some 2 years
of study by the Town's engineers
and negotiations with the
Southern Mercerizing Company.
Mayor Kenneth L. Tucker
accepted the deed this past
Thursday to Lake Lanier from W.
H. McDoanld, Vice President
and Treasurer of the
Southern Mercerizing Company.
In accepting the deed, Mayor
Tucker stated, “Water is rapidly
becoming one of our most
precious resources. The potential
development of Lake Lanier as a
raw water supply will insure
sufficient water to meet the needs
of our Town for the next 50
years.” Lake Lanier is an
impoundment of approximately
135 acres located in Greenville
County, South Carolina and
known as the “Lake Bed" or land
covered by the impounded waters
of Lake Lanier. Also included in
this acquisition is 10.35 acres of
property from the dam to Hwy
176 South. The approximate
estimated appraised value of
Lake Lanier and the 10.35 acres is
1.5 million dollars. The Southern
Mercerizing Company deeded
this property to the Town of
Tryon as a gift.

“The Southern Mercerizing
Company no longer demands

Jim Lowry Named
Purchasing Officer
Jim Lowry
Jim R. Lowry, president of
Lowry Chevrolet, Inc., in Tryon,
has been named state purchasing
officer by Secretary of the
Department of Administration
Jane Smith Patterson.
Lowry, 36, will begin his duties
as director of the Division of
Purchase and Contract
December 1.
The Robeson County native is a
1966 graduate of N. C. State
University in aeronautical
engineering Lowry was an
aircraft research engineer with
Lockheed Aircraft in Georgia for
three years and was affiliated
with General Electric Computer
Division in South Carolina,
Florida and Charlotte, before
becoming self-employed in the
automobile dealership in Tryon.
A Lumbee Indian, Lowry is
chairman of the North Carolina
Commission of Indian Affairs. He
was the founding chairman of the

Kudzu Fire
The Tryon Fire Department
was called out Wednesday night
about 10:08 to a fire near the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Pack. The dead kudzu caught up
and spread to the grass, leaves
and bushes.
Two Fires At
Same Place
The Columbus Fire
Department was called to two
fires Wednesday at the Rock
Quary on Fox Mountain Road.
The grass and woods fire burned
about a V of an acre at 12:30 p.m.
and then about 3 p.m. it caught up
again and burned about another
Mi acre.
Thanksgiving
Service Thurs.
A Tryon community-wide
Thanksgiving service will be held
Thursday at 10 a m at the Holy
Cross Episcopal Church The
Rev. John D. Smith of the Tryon
Presbyterian Church will bring
the message.

Gets Scholarship
Six students at the University
of North Carolina at Asheville
have been awarded scholarships.
Awarded an Endowment
Scholarship was John F. Leon
(Jeff), literature major and son
of Mr. and Mrs. J. M Leon, Jr. of
Tryon.
