N. C. State officials ended the
Central Prison hostage-taking
Thursday by sending three
inmates to a federal prison as
they demanded, then announcing
within an hour after they left that
they would be returned to the
state.
The Democrat Women will
meet tonight at 7:30 at the
courthouse to hear and meet the
candidates.
Thursday is the AFS Spring
Fling at the Landrum High
School at 7:30 p m. It will feature
Gaye and Phil Johnson,
Bluegrass, Landrum High School
Jazz Band, 0. P. Earle School
Chorus.
Saturday is the Block House
Steeplechase. The First Race is
at 2 P- m -. Gates open at 10 a.m
with reserved parking only.
Meet The Candidates
Tonight At 7:30
The Polk County Democratic
Women will meet tonight at 7:30
p.m. at the courthouse in
Columbus. The program will be
"Meet Our Candidates.” State
House and Senate Candidates as
well as local candidates will be
present. All Democrats are
invited.
Tryon Day Is
Saturday, April 10
Tryon Day will be held
Saturday, April 10th, according
to Robert Scruggs, president of
the Tryon Chamber of
Commerce. The special day is
being sponsored by the Tryon
Central District Committee and
the Town of Tryon as well as the
Chamber of Commerce.
Last year’s successful event
will be repeated again this year,
featuring a riding tour of the fine
homes in the area. A few of the
homes will be open.
One new feature this year will
be Southern Railways replica of
the Best Friend of Charleston, the
first steam locomotive to pull a
train of cars in regular service on
the American continent, and it
happened in Charleston, S. C. on
Christmas Day 1830. Children
and adults will be able to ride the
train on the sidetrack. Southern
Railroad will also have their
exhibit car.
A street dance will be held that
evening at the Depot.

Is Kiwanis Speaker
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at the
Pacolet River Plantation. Tryon
Town Manager Charles Lott will
give a slide presentation of the
Downtown Business District of
Tryon. This is the same
presentation he will make today
in Raleigh before the North
Carolina Operation Beautiful
Committee. Tryon was selected
as one of the top three towns in
North Carolina for Beautification
of Cities under 5,000. Mr. Lott will
use slides taken by Gen. Harry
Evans, Jim Moore, Ken Tucker
and Paul Culberson. The
program will give a history of the
Downtown area.
Bob Millikin is in charge of the
program.
